... now they must watch their abundance of luxuries fall away, making room for the tools of survival, and witness this time of relative peace wither into the same fears that harper's ballads had warned them about for generations.

The Dragon’s Venture and the Dragon’s Reach both had entered port just outside of Keroon Hold, bringing cargo in trade from the territory of Fort. They’d been docked since morning, and the Cargo Masters had already unloaded their goods to make room for the Runners that would be delivered to Fort. After the ship’s cleaning and prep to take on livestock, the crew left to enjoy the rest of their day at rest. They wouldn’t need to make ready to leave until the next day.

While at port, the Dragon’s Venture’s young master remained on board for some time, until after all of the crew had gone from the ships, but for a handful of the private guardsmen employed by the trade organization. Standing on the top deck in his private suite, looking out through the round porthole window, Changhui contemplated leaving ship with the rest of the crew, but doubt and his own private fears gave him pause.

This was Changhui’s first time visiting Keroon in several Turns, and would be the first time he’d done more than watch from a distance, when visiting. It would be the first time he’d stepped foot on Keroon lands since the time he and Lady Sienne had fled the territory when he was little.  That thought alone made him anxious. Because the last time he was here, he'd become a victim of murder. Even now, he lived as a dead man.

But this was his Hold. Keroon should belong to him. He was born the closest related male to the former Lord Holder Yongmun and therefore, it was Changhui’s duty to reclaim it, thereby fulfilling his father’s will.

Knowing that it had been his father's will for him to inherit this hold however, bolstered his resolve to go from the ship and explore the local streets and the people who thrived in them. He wanted to know them more.

“Haran, Let's go for a walk.”

Haran bowed his head, acknowledging Changhui’s request as he stepped aside, making way for the young man to move from the room. The pair were on the ground level of the trade ship, the Dragon's Reach, moments later.

Disembarking from the Dragon's Reach, Changhui and Haran spent the rest of their day walking at leisure about the streets of the port, eventually meandering toward the outskirts, until they arrived at a creek that wound alongside their path, leading back into the ocean. As the sun lingered along the distant horizon, spreading the last of its warm light in broken, glassy reflections atop the sea, the men approached the shoreline, watching while avians swooped down to hunt their beach-side prey.

Watching them dive to collect their meals made Changhui realize that by remaining out at this hour, he was keeping Haran from eating his supper, so the young man stopped to inquire conversationally, "Am I keeping you from dinner? If you're hungry, we should head back to the ship."

Though the guardsman's head bowed in gratitude of his young master's consideration, he smiled in an assuring manner, "Young Master, it has been many Turns since your last visit here. There will be a meal for us on the Dragon's Reach when your eyes have feasted on the sights here for long enough. We should return only when you are ready."

Looking on the man with eyes that spoke of his gratitude, Changhui nodded his appreciation of the sentiment. Between the two of them, there was no need for words though. Haran was almost like a brother to Changhui. Haran was Changhui's closest friend and advisor, outside of the handmaid, Lady Sienne, who'd raised him. To be quite honest, Changhui might very well consider Haran his only friend.

Maori could not wait to get out of the home. Doing calm, ladylike things such as reading poetry aloud, embroidering, pouring tea, updating records, being the quiet and mild hostess, it was all well and good and she did enjoy some of those tasks. But she needed to run, to climb, to dive and swim and to roam the country-side and a million other not-so-ladylike activities.

Maori may be the perfect lady, even though she wasn't technically a Lady by blood. She was also maybe the perfect adventuress as well. Today she had been living her life as she always lived it. Day after day assisting and learning from both her mother and her father. Two halves to herself existed within her. She had been a lady all day. Now it was time to be free.

And be free, she knew exactly what she wanted to do now. Before she was to board the boat with her father's wares, she would take one last moment for herself. Dismissing her travel companions that would board with her for the journey, she slipped away. Disappearing without a trace as she could not afford being found. Not yet.

Sneaking off to her favorite place, she stood upon the cliff top with her silky white dress blowing behind her gently in the breeze from the sea. Looking down at the deep waters lapping the bottom of the cliff she then turned her eyes outward to the endless horizon and breathed deep. It was so peaceful here. It was her spot, her secret spot where no one ever came.

After a moment of enjoying to sea and sky and the peace it brought her, she began to remove her clothing. All of it. With a reckless sort of grin upon her face, she stepped out of her shoes and dress and all the underthings as well. The only thing she did not remove was the small dagger strapped to her thigh. She never went anywhere without it.

As bare as the day she was born, Maori inched closer to the cliff's edge. Delicately turning her toes over the edge of the stone there, she slowly raised her hands as if they were wings. Bending her knees, she pushed off and threw herself off of the cliff. Her dive would be head first and she reveled in the adrenaline rush this high dive always gave to her. It made her feel so alive.

Convinced by Haran's words that it would be okay for them to linger a while longer on the beach, Changhui turned himself back around to continue walking. "Thank you."

Grateful of his guardian's consideration, Changhui always found great reason to appreciate the man as a friend. Haran had always been there for him -for as long as he could remember.

The two of them strolled for a distance more, until the sand began to make way for larger stones, leading up an incline that gradually became a hill with cliff side overlooking the water. As they neared the hill, Changhui's gaze turned toward the sky, leading his eyes in the direction of a figure poised at the edge of the cliff. Upon spotting the figure there in the distance, he stopped walking, and stared. Haran too, stopped, but only after realizing that the young master's attention was fixated upon something, did he turn his own gaze that way.

Both men stared after the figure in wonderment, neither one seemed to anticipate that that lone form would momentarily be plunging toward the water; when she did, their expressions both transformed into worry.

Without warning, Changhui took off running, desperate hands fumbled to release the belt and strap across his chest that secured his weapon across his back, and when he neared a certain point at the water's edge, dropped the weapon to the ground before rushing in.

Haran called after him, but when Changhui did not respond, he knew that the only thing he could do was to simply be there to provide necessary assistance to his young master. So, when Changhui rushed into the water, Haran prepared himself to enter the water, should there be a need. He watched the young man intently, fixing his gaze sternly, watching over him.

Having diving into the surging tide that swept up  the short, Changhui swam as hard and fast as he was able, to reach the girl who'd plummeted into the water. Getting to the cliff by swimming felt as though it was taking ages to reach her. Well, he thought it was a her. And he was having trouble finding her, at the moment.

Diving under the waves to see if he could locate the figure, he could only hope that he was swimming in the right spot. Of course, it was likely that the current could have already swept her body out to sea, and she was already drowning.

Surfacing for a breath of air, Changhui looked about himself frantically,.. and beginning to lose hope. He was nothing if not persistent though, so he continued to swim across the area, ducking back under the water until he finally caught sight of her.

His heart leaped in his chest when he saw the shadowed silhouette of the woman.. and so panicked was he, about reaching her in time, when his arm wrapped around her from behind, in order to bring her back to the surface, he hadn't even thought about the fact that she was naked. In fact, he'd hardly noticed at all, so focused was he on simply saving her.

So, kicking his legs furiously, Changhui got both of their heads back above the water and started swimming toward shore.

Maori entered the water with her fingertips first and her toes pointed. Like an arrow she entered. Having taken a few deep breaths she had great lungs and did not immediately rise above the waters again. Heading down she hunted around for pretty shells or anything of interest. It was dim down under the waters but she could see well enough to keep her mind distracted with interesting things.

When she felt a tight grip around her middle, Maori, immediately reached for her dagger. But just as quickly she came to the realization that what had her was a man and his grip upon her was not improper. Okay, she was naked so it was technically improper but... well he wasn't groping. She she did not release her thigh dagger. Instead she helped the man carry her towards the surface.

What in the world was he doing in her secret place? Had he been... watching her? Oh... oh dear! She was naked, currently in the grasp of who knows who and what was he doing? Her back was to him and she could feel that he was fully clothed. And his hand upon her was ...strong.

When her head broke the surface, she attempted to twist out of his grasp and turn to face him. Keeping her breasts below the surface, though if he looked down he would probably be able to see more than just her top. He would see her tattoo over the region of her heart and he would see... too much.

Pushing him away, she tried to put a little distance between them. Her eyes were suspicious and very startled. Her voice was forced out of her throat when she called out to him, "What are you doing? Who are you!? ...And keep your eyes upon my face. If I see them wandering where they ought not to, it will be the last thing you see."

It hadn't escaped Changhui's notice that the girl was also fighting to reach the surface. He didn't realize until several breaths later that she was actually fighting his hold on her as well. And that thought startled him.

Soon, Maori was facing him, and as he arm had struggled to maintain its hold on her through her resistance, the young man was suddenly quite aware that under his hand, her body was not clothed. He might have flushed to know that, had she not turned nearly accusatory words upon him then. Before she'd even started speaking however, he'd barely caught a glimpse of her bare chest just under the surface of the water. It wasn't a lewd glance; in his defense, it just happened! ><

As she addressed him in a firm tone that seemed unwelcoming of his help, her hands also pushing him away, he tried to think of the gesture as something that would keep them from becoming a tangle of limbs instead of one that was unappreciative. He was unwilling to believe that she was more worried about her nakedness than getting back to shore. That being the case, Changhui's features were probably painted in something of an expression of disbelief.

"Would you rather die out here? I saw you fall from the cliff! Do you know that the undercurrent could sweep you out to sea?" Though the rest of her comment amused him because it was absurd to think that a person would swim all the way out here, just to see her breasts! Though, wasn't it ironic how the mere mention of don't look at something automatically made the eyes involuntarily wander out of curiosity?

It was a good thing then that Changhui's attention remained well enough distracted by the fact that the girl seemed more upset at him than anything. His expression however, seemed to ease into a relatively calm one after that; though his eyes briefly flashed with upset.

In the next breath, Changhui decided that if she wanted to take that risk of drowning, then she could do so -but he could not honestly afford that risk. There was far too much at stake for him. So, turning from the girl before she could begin to speak more, Changhui began swimming back to shore.

His expression of disbelief was quickly explained by his words.

"Would you rather die out here? I saw you fall from the cliff! Do you know that the undercurrent could sweep you out to sea?"

This man truly believed she was in danger of dying? That she had fallen from the cliff side? Oh. Now his fully-clothed form made perfect sense. He had jumped in to try and save her. It was... strange, how that realization made her drop her eyes and grew slightly flushed. It was also when she looked at him in this new light that she realized just how extraordinarily handsome he was. And young and... yes, very handsome. But...

He had looked?! She had just told him to keep his eyes above the water and, he had looked!

He turned away from her then and began to swim towards shore. It was only then that she raised her own eyes towards the shore and noticed another man, a man that looked rather dangerous standing with an intense focus at the water's edge. Oh for goodness sakes! Was the entire continent going to find her secret place?

There was only one thing she could do in this instance and it didn't involve her return to swimming and diving. Instead she glared at his head as he left her and headed herself towards the cliff she had dove from.

With fingers and toes she began to climb the cliff. It was not an easy climb but she had been doing it for a few turns now. She could climb blindfolded. And in fact, she had. Well, sort of. Just to see if she could do it if she had to, she had kept her eyes firmly closed all the way up. It was not easy and it took three times as long but she made it. She did not keep her eyes closed but she sure hoped there were two men nearby that were.

There was no way she could keep them from watching if they had a mind to. And she obviously could not follow the man out to the shore. She definitely could not stay in the water forever either. So, she took a risk and climbed the cliff. Taking risks she had taken many times before. Climbing over the top, she disappeared from their view.

A few minutes later if the men were to approach the cliff top, they would see a fully clothed woman now standing there and frowning sadly out at the sea as the sun drew closer to the horizon. She held her arms around her belly and her hair was laying loose and damp down her back.

Her secret place was not so secret anymore. She thought to go down and thank the man for having 'saved' her and set him straight as to what was really going on, but... she had probably offended him enough. So she looked out at the sea and grew slightly sad. Would she be able to come here anymore? Had her place of peace been forever torn from her?

She sighed. She had heard two sets of footsteps behind her. She did not turn around right away. She just listened to see if those steps would come closer or if the owner of those steps would speak.

She herself spoke. Her voice was very quiet and soft. It was the only thing she could think to say. "I did not need saving."

((ooc note for Eloaene: Not sure which way I wanted to go with this so...
This is a 'Choose-Your-Own-Adventure' moment. Which way would you like it to play out? Have fun!
Smile))

Warning: Two lewd guys with evil intentions confront Maori.

Then she turned around and quickly realized that perhaps she had been wrong. Being saved really looked pretty good right about now. As two disgusting men with lewd looks upon their alcohol infused selves stared hungrily at her.

"Oh darlin' Come to papa shweety."

"Nooo, come ere' I'll saves ya."

The men staggered but were still fast and still very strong. Maori did not know whether to fight them both or dive back off the cliff fully clothed. Where was that handsome man when she really needed him? Turning to face the sea, she tried to run and to dive but she was caught roughly in the larger man's grasp.

Maori opened her mouth and began to scream. It was quickly cut off by a very hard backhand to her face. Her head lolled to the side partly from the blow and partly because she had took the blow and rolled with it to lessen it's impact as she had been taught. It still left her dazed and seeing stars though.

It was then that the second man came and began to touch her face and her neck in gentle, sloppy caresses that made her feel gross. He moved in for a kiss but her thigh dagger in her hand now caused his lower region more than a little discomfort when he drew closer and it stopped him periodically in distraction as his slow mind tried to figure out what was going on.

"Get away from--" She began to scream but the larger man's free hand put a stop to her cry with a tight grip around her neck.

"You iz comin' with ush darlin'." He slurred.

It was his final mistake. Maori could not kill him and keep the other at bay. She really did need help now. And she could not breathe. She had not been drowning before, but she sure was now. Seeing spots, her mouth was open trying to find any air whatsoever. Taking a chance, she moved her dagger from the smaller man and ran it across the man's arm that held her throat. She cut as deeply as she could. She tried to cut again but it was starting to become hard to concentrate now. She desperately needed to breathe.

Much to her dismay and astonishment, the man merely looked at the river of blood coming out of his arm now and laughed. He was drunk... he wouldn't feel it. Of course he wouldn't feel it. She was in some serious trouble. She really did not want to have to kill these men if she didn't have to. Who knew who they were first of all, and the mess and rumors that would fly... well, she didn't need to bring it upon her home. She certainly wasn't going to be submissive in this either. She would fight and fight hard. Just as soon as she could get some air. Just a little.

If only she hadn't climbed back up her cliff. If only she had never come at all. Her fingers were getting tingly from lack of oxygen. Things were going very dark.

Fifteen seconds.

That was all the time it took for one to lose consciousness once the blood flow to the brain was cut short, and though Haran had been the first to spy the drunkards traveling up the hill, there was no knowing what they'd do once they got there. Of course, having a lovely woman come up the side of the rock face and clothe herself again before them, he had his suspicions. The Guardsman didn't expect them to react quite as violently, though.

By that time however, Changhui was returning to shore, and once he was there, and safe, Haran expressed is concern to the young master. But only since Changhui ha expressed concern for her before. Generally, it was practice not to involve themselves in the affairs of others; that way there was no unnecessary nor undue attention focused on them. The Dragon's Venture didn't need to invite complications to their own already lofty goals.

"Young Master! The girl!" Haran gestured up top the hill where the men had gotten physical with her. As soon as Changhui saw the trouble she was in, he gathered his weapon, ordering his guardian to follow.

It was too late to avoid violence by the time they had run up the hill, Haran and Changhui both noticed when they got there, that she'd been unable to break free of her attacker, and she seemed to be drifting from consciousness -or perhaps already have passed out. Or perhaps she'd suffered some unseen injury by them?

Changhui didn't like any of those options.

To make sure his young master was protected, Haran's sword was drawn, just as Changhui too, found it appropriate to do the same. Haran managed to knock out one man with a strike from the pommel of his weapon, as Changhui sliced the tip of his blade across the other man's forearm to cut the tendons in his arm. But, since he would take no risks concerning the man with hands about the girl's neck, Changhui's sword was deftly withdrawn to reangle it as he took the hilt in both hands, driving it into the man's side.

Fifteen seconds.

She had cut his arm twice and very deeply before her vision was going dark. After all of those turns of fight training she was helpless? How ironic. One more thrust of her dagger was attempted but before it could reach the man's heart where she had aimed it, it fell out of her fingers as she slowly grew limp in the man's grasp.

Her knees buckled and Maori did not even see her saviors coming to her rescue. Her last thought was for her father and mother. What would they say when she was found dead? ....Or worse?

She didn't stay conscious long enough to consider it for long. Collapsing to the ground, she did not see her attackers get subdued. Her face had been scratched, her lip was a little bloody but not by much. The harsh handprint around her neck was very noticeable. Even after the man's hand released her and he sank to his knees with shock written on his dying face, she remained out cold. In fact, if Changhui or Haran looked closer, they might realize that she wasn't just out cold. She wasn't breathing.

Withdrawing his blade from the attacker's side where he now bled profusely, Changhui only then noticed that the girl's body was also falling.

The sword in his grip was adjusted in its hold so that as Changhui tried to reach to soften her fall, it would not come into contact with her. It was an awkward maneuver however, and the reach didn't help as much as he'd intended. So, Changhui let the weapon drop to the ground, moving to assist her with hands that were freed. Haran too, hurried to stand near where she was at.

On his knees, Changhui lifted the girl by the shoulders, trying to support her with one arm while he seemed to be searching for any significant injury other than what he already knew... His free hand felt for a pulse, but it was weak enough to make him worry. And after leaning over to check for a breath, the young head of the Dragon's Venture caught his own breath in his throat, unsure...

"Haran. I think she's stopped breathing." Though Changhui's expression was customarily neutral, his eyes seemed to speak of worry.

"Young master. We should leave here, and not get involved further. Not with one man possibly dead... The other will wak-"

"Haran. We have to save her." Changhui's voice was insistent; afterwhich, the guardsman's expression grew slightly dour, finding the whole situation undesirable. But regardless, he was unable to go against Changhui's order.

"Then we'll have to resuscitate her quickly and move her from this place. Suspicions will be raised, if we are found here."

Of course, that was something Changhui was already keenly aware of.

Patting the girl's face with his hand, Changhui called to her to see if she would wake. He did so more than once, but her eyes never opened, and still, she seemed not to be breathing. Generally, after a few moments of restoring bloodflow to the brain, a person could wake up. Of course, it was also likely that perhaps he gauged wrong, and the attacker had done more than simply cause her to go unconscious.

The young man lay her back on the grass then, leaning over her with fingers pinching her nose closed while his mouth met hers to blow air into her lungs.

Maori did not feel herself being caught. All she had known was darkness. A nothing that tugged her down. He could not see. She could not think. She could not breathe.

In the moments that followed Changhui's attempts to awaken her were fruitless. She did not waken. Though the moment she was laid down upon the ground again, she did start to regain her awareness. A single breath through her nose may have continued if it had not suddenly been pinched off.

Then the warm feel of lips upon her own was felt. Her mouth was separated slightly so that the air could come into her being. But this frightened her. She had never been... She had never... Was she being kissed?!

Blinking open her eyes to see a very... the very handsome man's face right there above her own, she reacted instinctively without thought. It was the reaction of her training that kicked in even as she gasped in her breath of air.

One moment he was over her. The next her body was attempting to throw off her 'opponent'.

Scrambling back a little ways, she looked wide eyed between Haran and Changhui, whom she still did not know the names of. With a hand to her bruised throat and another to her lips. She gasped out with shock.

"You...you kissed me?"

Then she saw the downed men nearby and stood a little shakily to her feet. Going closer she reached down and retrieved her dagger. Then she turned and secured it to her thigh again, attempted to do it without revealing too much skin in the process.

"Thank you for coming to my aid. ...I must go now." And she began to hurriedly walk away back towards the port. Her cheeks were burning and her skin felt hot. Was she coming down sick now? Touching her lips again she blushed even more and tried to forget what had just occurred.

"You...you kissed me?"

At her sudden, almost flailing reaction to when their mouths came into contact, Changhui couldn't tell if she was trying to defend herself, or if she was simply so startled by the touch, that all she could do was throw her arms about.  Still, the young man quickly moved to avoid any possible injury, having been struck by one of her hands against his chest initially, anyway.

As he seemed to sit back and consider her words with some faint disapproval, Changhui also brought a hand up to the place where her hand struck -as though it had wounded him. Though, in truth, it was not something he couldn't have ignored.

"Think of it what you will. We saved your life."

Standing to his full height before she did, the young master of the Dragon's Venture retrieved his own blade and the scabbard that paired with it. As he took the time to secure the belt and strap back about his middle and across his chest, it was with a still neutral expression that his eyes watched her turn and move away from them.

If she was so keen on traveling alone, then that was up to her.

Still, Haran felt the need to reiterate, for the young man's benefit, "Young master, we should return to the harbour. It would be wise not to involve ourselves further."

Since it would be strange leaving the hill together, Changhui had them wait for a moment longer, before making their trek back toward the port. "We'll take another path, on the return."

Maori blushed red all the way back home. Changing her clothes and calming down, she tried very hard to put the two men out of her thoughts. Four men actually. The two that had attacked her and the two that had saved her. The one that had put his lips to hers was... No. She would not think of him. He was terribly ugly in every way and old and... and she could not convince herself that he wasn't the most handsome man she had ever seen. And it made her angry. Angry at herself for being so careless and stupid.

Putting on her traveling clothes, which were darker, a thigh-length dress tunic over darker pants. She wore a nice leather belt over her middle and across her back was her sword. A dagger was on her thigh. This time over her pants and in plain sight. It was a larger one too. On her feet were not dainty shoes but strong shin-high leather boots. Her hair was braided and lay draped forward over her shoulder where it rested upon her chest. Around her forehead was a thick headband of dark crimson cloth. She was not dressed as her mother would wish. She was dressed like a female-version of a son. This was for her father.

When she was ready, she sent the two journeyman of her father's ahead to see to the loading of her father's wears. She herself followed after them with her parent's blessing and an escort of two guards. It was her father's wish that she be protected on the journey. Having lost a son, he took these precautions seriously and would not accept argument against it.

So with her two guards flanking her, she took her travel bag in hand and headed back towards the docks. It was almost dark out now but the torches had been lit generously along the docks to light the way.

Everything looked different at night and she walked and stopped and walked again. She seemed to be eyeing the ships there with intense scrutiny. She saw the shadowed figure of someone upon one of the ships and she called up to them.

"Ahoy, please do tell, where can we find the Dragon's Venture?"

Having arrived back at the Dragon's Reach without any other sordid confrontations, Changhui had changed clothes into a shirt and pants of a matching blue, with a longer, sleeveless wrap around tunic-coat drawn snugly about his torso where a crimson sash -nearly the colour of a Smithcrafter's Red- was tied and then belted. A straw hat that would have somewhat shaded the sun while it was still out, sat atop his head, and across his back was his sword; a long lanyard tassel hung from its pommel. The weapon itself was of significant grade, probably a two or three body sword, and had likely been crafted by Keroon's Master Smith some turns ago. The pommel was capped on its end with a jewel, and an intricate craftsmanship was inlaid there in decoration, of metal wrought from what looked like gold. It was clearly not an inexpensive piece.

Changhui and Haran had eaten and gone back to the ship's mid-deck to assist in the oversight of loading a few goods before the morning. Come morning, Runners would be brought on board, and they would begin their journey back to Fort Sea Hold. With them, a number of the green-clad Dragon's Venture private guard and loading crew moved about the dock to secure the the last of the crates that had come to them in the day.

The Dragon's Venture's young master and his guardian were about to step foot back onto the trade ship when both of their ears heard a voice call in their direction. Turning about to face the source of the sound, Changhui gestured for Haran to go to find out what was the matter.

As Changhui disappeared into the ship without open, outer decks, the Guardsman lengthened his stride to meet the one who'd called to them. Once he'd neared, Haran began to recognize that this girl was the same girl they'd run into earlier.

"Miss." Haran greeted. The Guardsman's weapon, housed in a black-lacquered scabbard, was held in his right hand as per usual. His uniform was the same Keroon Green as she'd seen him wearing earlier in the day, with a gold dragon's-head crest stitched upon the breast of the outer garment. It must have appeared quite official. His expression too, was somewhat staunch, and his manner a bit too direct, or curt even, to want to ever strike up any conversation with him. He was obviously a man guided by purpose.

"Is there something you need?" He wasn't sure why this same girl would be looking for them, unless she was coming perhaps to thank Changhui for saving her life earlier.

When the shadowed figure that she had seen separated into two distinct shapes, she narrowed her eyes to see better. As the one turned and came closer she watched it. The man moved like a guard with purpose and discipline.

As he came into a patch of light and drew near to her, she was hard put not to express her surprise. She did well to hide it though and bowed her head slightly to show him respect. "Sir." She spoke after his own simple greeting wondering to herself if he always held himself that way. Didn't this man ever smile? She was not intimidated in the least though. She'd grown up with guards similar to this and trained under a few and sparred with others. She began to wonder if she could make him crack his face into a smile. It was her new mission.

"Is there something you need?"

"Yes actually, there is something that we need." She glanced to the two guards that accompanied her that were a step behind her with their hands upon their own weapons. "I wish to find the Dragon's Venture. I am to accompany a shipment of goods to its destination onboard her. And, I need you to smile." She smirked slightly. "You're scaring the children."

There were no children around. But perhaps he'd get the point to loosen up. Her slight smirk grew ever so slightly as she awaited his answer and she glanced to his mouth to see if his lips might twitch at all. She would have taken the time to thank him for his part in saving her life but it was not the place nor the time. Perhaps she would see him again someday. Or perhaps she could say a thank you with a deeper meaning once she told him where her assigned ship was. Hopefully he would understand.

"I wish to find the Dragon's Venture. I am to accompany a shipment of goods to its destination onboard her. And, I need you to smile." She smirked slightly. "You're scaring the children."

It might have been natural for most people to break into a grin at that point, but Haran was more disciplined than that -more logical. That didn't mean that he wore a necessarily unpleasant or intimidating countenance, but he obviously did not share her humour at the moment. His focus was elsewhere.

Glancing beyond her, where her entourage remained standing with their cargo, soon returned his eyes to the young lady, and canting his head just so, finally replied in neutral tones, "I'm not sure I follow your meaning. However, this ship is the Dragon's Venture. I will have the Cargo Master come to have the goods inspected and approved for transport. Once that is done, you may all board, unless you have someplace else to stay for the night; but we will not depart until morning."

With that, Haran was waving over some men to help bring the crates in closer to the ship so that the Cargo Master could check for their documentation under the row of glow lamps lit along the dock there.  When they'd come, he went on to inquire, "The Cargo Master will need to see documentation from the Journeyman or Master who sent these."

Haran doubted that she herself was the craftsmaster or journeyman to which he referred, but then again, she had not proved, over the past few candlemarks they'd been acquainted, to be a typical lady, either.

"I'm not sure I follow your meaning. However, this ship is the Dragon's Venture. I will have the Cargo Master come to have the goods inspected and approved for transport. Once that is done, you may all board, unless you have someplace else to stay for the night; but we will not depart until morning."

Maori raised one eyebrow at him and her smirk was lost. "You don't follow my meaning?" She repeated. "Smile. Simple as that. And good. Then I've found my destination. Thank you." The Cargo Master should already have taken the necessary steps. The cargo should already be on board. ...Unless? He frowned and crossed her arms over her chest and narrowed her eyes.

The other two journeymen were going to be the death of her. Turning slowly around, she peered into the surrounding area and noticed a sign for a pub up the hill by a distance. The muted sounds of laughter, music and obvious drunken frivolity was going on. It was quite a distance away. Two recognizable young men were stumbling and laughing on their way to the port. Turning her eyes again, she noticed a tarp over three crates nearby.

Walking up to it, she lifted the corner of the tarp and saw the seal marking on the wooden crate on the top of the pile and frowned with cold anger in her gaze. Turning to the guards that accompanied her she instructed both of them, "Guard this."

Then she retraced her steps into the light.

"The Cargo Master will need to see documentation from the Journeyman or Master who sent these."

"It should have been taken care of already but it would seem as if the other two tasked with this have become unreliable. It will only be a moment."

She wasn't smiling now either. Turning her back to the ship, she kept her eyes trained upon the two obviously drunk men coming. Her arms were still over her chest. Her stance was not weak. The fingers of her one hand tapped a drumming beat of anger upon her arm as she waited.

It took a moment for the men to see her there and when they did, one laughed and tried to toast her with his nearly empty bottle. The other, looked rather ashamed and stumbled closer with his tunic a mess and his hair likewise.

"My L-"

"I told you not to call me that." Maori's voice was quiet but the tone cracked like a whip. She was not a Lady and probably never would be. It was just something they had started to call her for a tease. "Where are the documents for the crates?" She did not bother to ask them why they did not stay with them or why they had not boarded yet. She already knew the answer.

She watched as he patted his front and then threw up his hands and started crying. "I lost them in a poker game. I'm sorry My-."

Ignoring Haran and anyone else at this moment, Maori, quickly stepped forward and before anyone knew what had been done her dagger was at the man's throat and her icy words entered his ears.

"You have dishonored my father. He will hear of this. And you are the one that will tell him. Go now and bring your idiot brother with you. I will take care of this."

"But-"

"If you try to call me Lady one more time you will be breathing through your neck. Now GO!"

She would never kill him but he didn't know that. Instead he stumbled back, grabbed his confused brother and headed for who knew where. Huffing out a breath of disgust, she sheathed her dagger and turned back to Haran. "Forgive me for that. Seems as if some men can not be trusted. I can vouch for the origin of these crates and the Master who sent them. I can even call him out of bed to come her himself it that is necessary."

Her father would not be happy at all but he would come if needed.

The Cargo Master had reappeared from within the ship's bowels, striding toward them as the girl returned to Haran with apologetic words. The man was stopped though, when Haran upheld a hand to him. Nodding his understanding, Haran made his reply to Maori, "You have until morning then, to return with the documents. I bid you a good evening." Figuring that his business with her was done for the time being, Haran turned and began walking back toward the Dragon's Reach. The crew of the ship also briskly returned to finishing up other work, so that they could retire for the day.

It was true that the Dragon's Venture kept their own copies of such contracts of business agreement, but one copy was simply not enough to safeguard them from the possibility of infiltration or sabotage by what enemies they could very well have earned for themselves, given their underlying purpose. Secondary copies given to craftsmen at the time the arrangement of services was agreed upon, was precautionary, and later, for the crafter's own personal records if he should require it.

It was for that reason, because Haran was quite familiar with the strict policy they were governed by, that the Guardsman turned and walked away then. If they wanted those goods to travel, then they'd have to respect the operating policies of the Dragon's Venture. If not simply because the Dragon's Reach would also be traveling with the young master on board, and thereby, his safety was also to be taken into account. For all Haran knew, the young lady and her entourage had been the cause of delay for the real owners of the crates, and come to sneak on board the ship with false intentions. That was something Haran would not risk.

On board the ship, Changhui had gone up the stairs to the sleeping quarters prepared for him. He'd watched out the window while Haran spoke with the person on the dock, having little curiosity for what had transpired. So, stepping back from the port hole window, his hat was removed and set down upon a table, beginning to unbuckle the belt and back-strap that secured the weapon across his back.

Maori was furious. She wanted to run after those journeymen and just throw something at their heads for being so stupid. How could they gamble away the shipping documents? Seriously?! That was no better than gambling away the shipment itself. Or had that been their true wager?

Whatever the case might be did not matter. There were documents to be found and three crates to be guarded.

------------------------

Maori was very tired and very cranky. She had searched and followed every lead she was given to find the missing documents only to come up short every time. She refused to go home to her father and ask for the originals. This was a trust he had given to her to get it done right. She had delegated the loading of the crates to the other two. They had failed her and she had failed her father. There was one thing left to try before she returned to her father.

Ask to see someone on board the ship. The Captain perhaps.

With not an ounce of sleep, she returned to the guards and were very glad to see that they had taken turns guarding and had not left their post. Thanking them privately, she approached the gangplank and called up in a clear voice. "Ahoy Dragon's Venture. I wish to speak to the Captain."

Maori - Return of the Dragon's Reach (Tags: Maori) FotoFlexer_Photo67_zpsf7869fc2

It was the Cargo Master who had been nearby enough to hear her and make his way to Maori first. The middle-aged man began visiting with her about the ship's policy after being reminded about the girl's plea with them the night before, but he was unwavering in his stance on the matter, and seemed unwilling to disturb the captain, who was making ready to set sail.

Luckily, it was about that time, that Changhui and Haran had been on their way down the stairs from the upper level, just having eaten breakfast to finish preparing to take on the new day. Taking the lead, Changhui was still fidgeting to situate the buckle to the leather strap across his chest when a woman's voice also reached his ears.

Stepping out from the stairs to where he could view who the Cargo Master now continued to explain himself to, Haran met him with a few words about the previous evenings visitation from her, "It is the same young lady that we saw at the cliff. She claims that she is in the possession of weapons crates that are outside, on the dock, but has been unable to come up with the proper documentation that is always sent out to the crafter responsible for the wares before transportation."  After a moment's pause, he added, "There are two private guards, and two other men with her."

Considering his friend's words, Changhui stood there for several seconds longer, watching the interaction between the Cargo Master and the girl. Finally, the young man lengthened his stride again, to make his way to them. Haran followed, at his usual three paces or so behind the young head of the Dragon's Venture.

Hands clasped at the small of his back, Changhui entered into the sunlight beside the Cargo Master, at which point the man's words were cut off at a stammer as he realized who'd come up next to him. He then bowed courteously. Changhui was the first then, to speak, and doing so with some undercurrent of authority, though his manner, nor tone of voice was rude. "What goes on here?"

From under nearly black bangs and a head-band tied about his forehead, Changhui's discerning eyes danced between the Cargo Master and the young woman, settling easily upon her, as though for the first time gauging her character and her intentions there. Like the day before, he wore cloth of a satin brocade, but this time in purple -a colour that was more difficult to produce, and therefore more expensive to come by. The pants and wrap around tunic worn beneath the sleeveless robe worn over them, were plain, but obviously quite well-tailored, and the over-garment itself, reaching below his knees where mid-calf boots could be seen, was patterned in darker hues and contrasting red; crimson too, was a little more difficult to produce. Of course, a crimson sash encircled his waist, closing the garment, and that black leather belt and strap across his chest were worn to secure his weapon on his back. There, the lanyard tassel swayed, possibly bringing attention toward it, though its movement was not the only thing there to catch the eye. A cut and polished emerald of significant size, was set into the pommel of the sword he bore, caught the light of the early morning sun, similar to the glossy threads he wore.

Behind them, a bell rang from within the ship, calling sailors for their meal time, while from the bow, where the ship had been carved into some likeness of a dragon's craning head and open, toothy maw, smoke plumed from the kitchen therein. It was smoke from the dragon's mouth.

Maori knew she had very little time to get the crates on board the ship. Without the documentation she would have to rely upon her rank as the daughter of the master smith that had crafted the wares inside. If only she could speak to the captain, she could try and negotiate. But the one she spoke with now would not even allow her to see him. It was frustrating. And although she was very tired and running out of time very quickly to resolve this issue, she kept her voice calm but with an edge of authority. The Cargo Master did not seem to care who she was or what she was about. Perhaps it was because she was female? It did not seem to matter what her case was to present to the captain. The Cargo Master was not even going to give her a chance. She was frustrated but she remained calm and dignified.

The two journeymen that had wagered away the documentation needed were feeling rather ill right now but they were at least somewhat presentable behind her where the guards waited near the wares. Maori would not allow either of them to speak on her behalf, despite the fact that this was all their fault. She was the one that would have to answer to her father too.

She was not going to give up until the ship was sailing away. She was that determined. What she had not counted on was that a very familiar and blush-inducing individual came into her line of sight. Stepping beside the Cargo Master, she looked upon him with a startled raising of her eyebrows. He was very richly dressed. With that and the fact that the Cargo Master was treating him like royalty, she wondered just who this man was. Was he here to save her yet again? She had no idea.

"What goes on here?"

She did not answer right away. Instead her eyes were caught by the tassel and the jewel on the pommel of his sword. The craftsmanship was exquisite. She knew the hand that made it for it was unmistakably his work. She had seen that sword or one very much like it before. If this was the same one as she remembered, she had watched it being made in every step of its creation, for it was her own father, the Master Smith that had made it. She was sure of it.

Not knowing who this young, did she mention very handsome, man was or what his rank might be, she bowed her head to him. Half in respect and half in thanks for what he had done for her the day before. Then she answered his question.

"I am to accompany this shipment to its destination. The documentation was gambled away by the two journeymen that were charged with loading the wares last night. Instead they gambled away the documents which I was unable to reacquire. I am trying to speak with the Captain to secure passage by my name alone but I am not being allowed to see him. It would seem as if my plight would be an inconvenience to the Dragon Venture's captain." Taking a steadying breath she added, "You seem like a man of influence, perhaps you can request a moment of the captain's time on my behalf? I will not keep him long." Then with another glance towards the pommel of his sword she found herself saying something else she had not intended to. "I see that you have acquired one of my father's creations. I trust you keep it well maintained?"

She had no idea why she asked that. But since it was a simple yes or no question, she did not see that it would take up too much more time and so did not try and retract her words.

Changhui listened patiently as the woman explained her situation, his intelligent eyes seeming more responsive to her words than any facial expression, seeing as his was generally neutral. Watching her, the young man, who could hardly have looked any older than she, continued to rest his eyes on Maori even as he spoke to either of the other men standing there with them. "I'll inspect and approve the goods she accompanies, myself. Bring a crow bar."

Not thinking that someone who obviously was familiar with the Master Smiths work would have come here with false intentions, he decided to inquire after the curiosity as he started walking toward where the crates and duo of guards still stood. Of course there was always the possibility that the girl had simply guessed that a sword as fine as his own could only naturally be made by a master. In any case, as they walked, he commented, "You seem to be quite familiar with the master crafter's work. What relationship do you have with him?"

Approaching the crates, Changhui waited for someone to come with a crowbar to open each of the crates for inspection. Harlan had followed after them as had the cargo master, only, it had been a third man who'd come running up with the piece of equipment requested. The man with the crow bar worked the flat end of it under the sealed lid of one of the wooden boxes, prying it loose about all the edges until it could be removed. After which, he did the same with the other two.

(Yay On my way! Back home!yay for iPads in the car that run on phone signal and not wifi. Lol. Leaving it open ended there or Maori to respond. )

Who was this man? Staring at him with deep contemplation she heard his words. They sounded like the quiet commands of one born to lead.

"I'll inspect and approve the goods she accompanies, myself. Bring a crow bar."

It took her a moment to clear her head and actually pay attention to what he had just proclaimed. She also took note of how the others responded to him. Not one questioned the young man and not one of them chose to complain or disagree.

Who was he? Maori had no idea. But she was grateful...again, or his assistance. She must look like the absolute, bumbling fool for all he'd seen of her. It was embarrassing. But she was not too prideful not to accept the help he offered. And she was gracious enough to be thankful too.

"Thank you." She said simply and was about to ask his name when he spoke again.

"You seem to be quite familiar with the master crafter's work. What relationship do you have with him?"

A very slight hint of a proud and kind smile tilted the corners of her mouth when he asked what he did and she was pleased to tell him the truth for he had only proven himself to be helpful so far.

"That, good Sir, I will answer with pride." Her pleased smile became a little more obvious but not overly so. "Master Smith Orizon is my father."

While earlier the girl's attempt to make him smile seemed to fail utterly, the effortlessness of her smile now, and the innocent but naturally proud way she told him of her relation to Master Orizon, made his lips turn up in the hint of an adorable grin that was enough to produce the start of dimples in his cheeks. Though he was nineteen, the expression might have made him seem slightly more adolescent.

Though the young man's eyes seemed to speak openly of the fact that some commentary remain unspoken in light of her relation to the Master Crafter, Changhui did not speak anything after that. Knowing her relation, at this point, was enough.

Changhui's eyes had come to watch the removal of the lids of the crates, leaving a long moment of silence to follow, between them, before he finally was able to beand over the first crate, reaching into it to sort through what had been packed neatly inside. Having at some point taken possession of the Cargo Master's list of goods to be checked on board, Changhui checked the list against what was there in the boxes before passing it back to the man. Waving for the crewman with the crow bar to seal the crates up then, he consulted the Cargo Master briefly, "I will sign off on the acceptance of these crates from the Master Crafter later, once everything's been loaded. I'd rather we don't run the Captain behind schedule." Of course, that could have been his whole reason for taking charge of the situation in the first place. The ship's captain kept a tight schedule and didn't like interruptions to his work.

Soon, the crates were being loaded onto the Dragon's Reach, and Changhui was headed back up the gangplank. Before going that direction, he'd called back to Maori, "Make sure you and those who accompany you, are on board in the next half candlemark."

The smile that came to his mouth was nothing short of adorable. It made her own smile widen. She did not speak another word though as he got to work checking the crate's contents with the list he had. When they were approved and boarded she sighed with relief. But her job wasn't over yet and the unpleasantness of what she was about to do now was not looked forward to.

"Make sure you and those who accompany you, are on board in the next half candlemark."

She nodded in understanding and then turned abruptly to the two journeymen still with her. The guards had gone aboard to be with the crates as per her request. One of them was assigned to her specifically and so kept his watch upon her from the deck of the ship. She needed space and so he would grant it but he wasn't letting her out of his sight with the ship ready to sail so soon.

Maori halted the two journeymen that had begun to head towards the ship to board it when he sharp but quiet tone stopped them. What she had to say to them they did not like and their voices rose with anger and defiance. One of them looked like he was going to back hand her across the face even but instead of shrinking back, she raised he chin and stepped closer. Her hands were upon her hips. The slight tilt of her head and the subtle movements of her body suggested that Maori had said something else. The tone was too low for anyone else but them to hear. And it caused the one about ready to strike to freeze and then relax his hand.

Their own voices dropped then and one after the other bowed their heads to her and watched as she left them there. She turned and began to board the boat without them. They had dishonored her father's trust. They could no longer be allowed to accompany the shipment. She had forbidden it. She knew her father would have done the same.

What she wouldn't do for a trained firelizard right now. She'd send a note to him alerting him of the change in plans.

Setting her feet on the deck, she looked around and approached her personal guard. "They are not to come aboard. See that they do not please."

He nodded to her and began to guard the ramp.

Now, that the unpleasant task was complete, Maori would ask for directions to her cabin. Seeing the young man that had cleared the crates, she watched him but did not approach. He was such a mystery to her. Who was he? She realized that she did not even know his name.

Maori - Return of the Dragon's Reach (Tags: Maori) Empty

Being the first to board the ship again, Changhui had left the lady and her entourage to the care and concern of the Cargo Master -and themselves. The young head of the Dragon's Venture did not make a habit of sticking his nose into the affairs of others where it did not concern him. He'd gone to watch people along the surrounding docks through a porthole window, which he had to lean just slightly from the waist to see through. There, as he watched, and at the same time waited for the Dragon's Reach to set sail, the young man leaned against the wall of the ship with one hand.

As the oarsmen and other crew began to make their way to their places, taking seats along outsides of the walkway, which surrounded the center-most cargo-hold area on the mid-deck where the Runnerbeasts were housed for the duration of the trip, Changhui stood straight again, casting his eyes and attention down the length of the ship. Taking notice of the men who now prepared themselves for the ship's disembarking, he eventually caught sight of Maori and her two guardsmen near the ship's open door, which was now in the process of being closed, and the gangplank being removed. In that moment, their eyes must have met, while Changhui noticed her watching him, but he did not maintain the contact for long.

Turning to speak a word to the Guardsman Haran, who still seemed to shadow his every movement, Changhui was the first to make his way toward the stairs leading back up to the top level of the ship where quarters were prepared for the Captain and Changhui, both. Disappearing up the narrow stairs and back into his room, Haran followed after.

Interrupting her apparent stare off into space, the Cargo Master was kind enough to stop by and offer some direction, "Miss, if you need to rest, there are cots to sleep on, at the lower deck; where the cargo was all stowed away. It's not much, and the space is shared by the crew that rotate on and off duty, but the Dragon's Reach doesn't take on many human passengers." Nodding toward the Runners that were on board, that seemed to be enough said, as he sauntered off in another direction, hollering after another crew member.

If Maori were to make her way to the lower deck of the ship, she'd find that there were indeed about 30 bunked beds available to rest on, with blankets and pillows to soften their thin but downy mattresses. Hay covered the floor and a number of square bails of it acted as makeshift seating arrangements or tables for crew (or passengers) to sit or eat upon. The space was lit by a small few porthole windows set high, near the ceiling of the lower deck, as well as several glow baskets, hung at varying intervals.
