In a time of need [Tags: Empyrean Wing! Secondary: Karene and all wings] Dnier_zpsc0f85f13

While Karene gathered the wing's leaders and flight leaders, as well as other senior crafters who would be essential in organizing their efforts in Ista, D'nier was gathering information on site. Ista was more of a disaster than he could have imagined, and he'd quickly sent a pair of riders who'd flown with him, to check on the status of Ista Hold. Though the Holds were not their dominion as a Weyr, there was enough evidence here to make him believe that Ista Sea Hold and all of the islands other hold sites would have been similarly affected. And if that was the case, there was no sense in waiting to help relief effort.

It didn't take long to realize that Ista was in shambles, and that nearly half of the Weyr's population had been decimated. Their Queens were gone and there was no telling how many others. Many were unaccounted for. There'd been so much loss amidst the chaos of the monster storm, that as death occurred, there was no real way to account for it. The eyes of many riders he'd seen there, looked vacant and desperate. There was no optimism to be found. Most were in shock. Without their Queens or other Weyr leadership, and with more devastation that most of them had ever seen, many didn't even know where to start trying to help at.

Having located a Headwoman's assistant there, the Weyrling Master and Candidate Master, as well as a couple of Wingleaders and their seconds, D'nier gathered them together to get the run down of events as they'd happened. Getting a feel for the overall situation more clearly from these few, it was only after he made sure that they all seemed to be capable of sound mind and stable emotional condition given the circumstances, before putting them to work for him. As a Weyrleader, his presence alone seemed to bring them the kind of much needed hope and reassurance that would pull them through this difficult time.

D'nier left the group with a few directives to start clearing out additional rooms for infirmary beds and then seeing if they could fire up any of the hearths in the kitchen caverns to warm what food was salvageable. A team of men would be gathered by the Wingleads to look for those who were missing and figure out which caverns were still flooded.

As D'nier strode back in the direction of where he and his team from Fort had landed, the riders who'd come with him followed with hurried steps. "L'mar, you will stay here. Go to the Weyrleader's office and make  yourself available so that the Istan personnel we were able to gather can report back to you on any new developments until I've returned. I ithink you will be sufficient for that job given your Holder background. I already made them aware that they will report everything to you for now. I trust that you and Ista's Wingleads will be able to handle anything else unexpected that comes up between now and when I get back. We'll return as soon as possible."

Acknowledging his Wingleader's orders, L'mar fell out of step with the rest, seeing them off as the rest of them swung up into their saddles and harnessed up to take off.

Within less than a minute, the team of riders from Alpha Flight's Empyrean Wing were hovering over Fort's bowl. Even as they descended to land, D'nier was in communication with Karene and her Queen, deciding what all needed to be done. Of course, there were a few obvious cares that D'nier took care of immediately after that, but Karene would be left to consider what to do about the lack of an Istan Queen and many other necessary personnel. For a time, Fort could loan several persons, but they would need to be in contact with the other Weyrs for relief, too. Fort was a large enough operation to run in and of itself, and they had just sent several more staff to the new Igen Weyr; supporting a third weyr on their own would be too strenuous on their resources. But D'nier did not think that other Weyrs or Holds, either one, would let Ista go without at least some form of aid.

Taroth, N'kyr tell Empyrean's Wing to gather all the blankets, towels, cleaning rags and dry clothes that they can, and then meet back at the bowl to trans port everything to Ista. Tell them Ista's been caught in a storm and needs aid. I want to see crates and cargo nets full. Hustle!

Almost as an afterthought, he added, Have N'kyr act in my stead, directing our wing for now. Tell him I'll join them in a bit. Also, let the Headwoman know that we'll need to borrow some personnel from her staff to help expedite the process. I'd like to see at least one, if not two non-riders with each rider. They'll be going to Ista to help out.

When the Weyrleader heard took Taroth's cue that he'd relayed the message, he went on, Tell K'thane to let Halcyon Wing know they are in charge of rounding up injured on the West side of the island. I'll have one of the other wings taking the East. They will need to gather together as many first aid supplies as they are able so that they can transport the injured back to the Weyr.

Again, D'nier paused to let Taroth relay the message.

Let Galvanic Wing know that they will be in charge of gathering and passing information. I want for their Winglead to split the wing up into five groups of six riders. Each of the Five groups will make visitations to each of Ista's five Major and Lesser Holds to gauge how they fared through the storms. They need to find out what relief each of the Holds is most in need of and then dispatch to other nearby, mainland Holds to request assistance. Each group of six will be dedicated to that hold in order to transport people, goods, messages, et cetera, all to and from the mainland. Likewise, I need for Galvanic Wing to dedicate a couple of riders to running messages for Karene. It's likely she'll need to be in touch with the other Weyrs. Once we've gotten a better handle on the situation at Ista Weyr, we'll be able to let others know where they can help at. I know for a fact that Benden at least, will be willing to help.

Make sure that each of the Wing Leads reports back to me and Karene both, periodically, to let us know their status.

D'nier went on to dole out orders to Beta Flight then, making sure that easily transported food stuffs were supplied to Ista, as well as any other needs were taken care of. The last two wings in Beta Flight would be assisting in the rescue of missing persons to the West, and cleanup of debris within Ista Weyr to make it livable again -and a haven for the injured. The Weyr would be the safest place should another storm come.

After making sure that orders were accepted by each Winglead, the Weyrleader headed off to meet up with Karene and make sure that there wasn't anything else she needed done, for the time being. For now, a good deal of their effort was just going to be transporting people and supplies, and ascertaining the extent of the damages at Ista. But, from what D'nier could tell, the whole situation looked pretty bleak.

The Weyrleader walked into the office he shared with Karene, hoping to find her there. He'd been somewhat close by already, so hadn't asked Taroth to confirm the Weyrwoman's whereabouts until he was already at the door -in which case, he could see for himself.

[N'kyr, your post is needed next, I think. Or soon, at least. Smile]

The Weyrleader's back. What's the word, Nicath?

The Brownrider had been watching and waiting for D'nier's return, knowing that they'd likely get put to work, soon after. If there was anything that Fort could do to lend a helping hand in times of distress, Fort Weyr was always mustering all the resources they could, in order to contribute in their own way. The Weyrwoman was always proactive, and in cases like these, decisive. Of course, he could say the same of the Weyrleader.

No word yet. Taroth says that N'kyr will be directing us shortly.

Standing from where he'd perched himself by the training grounds outside, the Brownrider tied a grey, woolen scarf about his neck, starting to button up his flight jacket as he anticipated that within a few moments they'd be asked to take action. He'd already gotten Nicath geared up for flight, so all they needed now was further directive.

Alright. Well let me know when Ramirath gives the order.

[Note to Players:  Refer back to your PMs from Caoimhe to see which PCs are paired up together for ferrying. I know for myself, Headwoman assistant Indylari and Z'rim are paired up, and it was going to be Jang and Syra. I'll post mine later, for these pairs, once the thread gets going.

Anyway, hope all that post works okay! >< D'nier got long winded.]

Syra was ready. She had know there was a meeting going on, but had chosen not to attend. She wasn't sure if her rank was enough, though admittedly the Weyrleader's were the ones who had appointed her, so she could have attended she supposed. Instead she had packed. No one had really told her to, but it seemed like common sense... at least to Syra. Rasenth was harnessed and laden with the supplies she could gather, assuming that she was going to be needed to ferry someone. She was in the call for the Empyrean wing,  though she usually lead the weyrlings but there were none right now. Soon, though. Syra grinned, anticipating the hatching of Galadrieth's clutch. Oh to have a class again, Syra lived to teach the new riders and their lifemates. But she would never let them know how much she cared, he encouraged them more than being soft.

Her smile disappeared quickly though, in the face of remembering the decimation of the Ista Weyr and the loss of so many dragons - including two queens. Rasenth rumbled beneath her, Syra sat astride him, her legs strapped securely behind the many bags she had packed with resources. The blue dragon took a few running steps and launched himself from their ledge, gliding gracefully down to the Weyr Bowl and landing without ruffling the air. He settled himself near their wingmates who had already gathered, standing high and leaving access to his carry net in case there was more that could be packed.

Syra slid from his back after undoing her straps. From her gear she retrieved a few sets of straps for guest riders and settled them so that she could put herself between two additional people. Kitchen staff appeared with crates of food, which the bluerider helped line beneath Rasenth until she was sure he couldn't carry more, there was nothing left to do but wait for whatever passenger she was ferrying and orders from N'kyr.

What of the lost dragons and their riders? They should be given all the honor they deserve.

We will ask D'nier if we can take them between when we are done with our current task. I agree, these dragons and their riders deserve to be treated as heroes.

Her words seemed to please the blue dragon, who settled himself to wait with grim pride, ready to do his duty just as his rider was. Rasenth knew he had chosen well for a lifemate.

In a time of need [Tags: Empyrean Wing! Secondary: Karene and all wings] 54de79da-bf92-40ab-9f9b-af0f74df81be_zpsd3e04448

Karene received the messages being sent by Taroth via Galadrieth. She had no way of knowing how close D'nier might be. Instead, she was giving her own orders to staff that were in the office. People were scurrying with their own tasks. The Weyr was a bustle with all of the things that they were organizing. She had the Head cook organizing food that would be easy to ship over via dragons. There were crates and bags full of clothes, bedding, bandages and other supplies being brought to the Bowl in order to be easier for riders to pick up supplies.

The Goldrider sent Jeneveth and Belisse immediately to Igen Weyr. The pair confirmed their safe arrival as soon as Jeneveth had landed. The other Gold would be flying soon, so it was probably not the best time for her to be changing Weyrs but what other choice did they have?

She was pacing the office, obviously looking at a parchment as she did so. One hand was hold the paper and the other was rubbing her forehead as she walked around. She didn't hear the door open, nor was she aware of the squalling child in her weyr. She'd blocked out thoughts of the baby and had been sadly, sharing the boy with a wet nurse. He was not crying long but Karene had been too busy to even notice to begin with. It was probably for the best that he would be leaving her care soon.

At the sudden movement of D'nier entering, she jumped. Her hand moved from her forehead to her chest. Instead of shouting in anger as she might have done in the past, she lowered the paper in front of her. Besides she had more pressing matters to deal with than emotional outbursts. "What is the state of Ista? Is it as bad as we feared?"

The keening of dragons had her on alert. She didn't like knowing that dragons were dying. The whole thing brought back horrible memories in wave upon wave of emotions she had yet to fully deal with. Lance felt like she was always dealing with the past. More death, more disaster, she only hoped that they didn't lose any more people on this mission.

She was at the laundry, the last place she would ever normally be, being loaded up with clean blankets, towels and rags.

Raidenth waited, already wearing her straps and ready for a shipment of things to be carried. She was one of the largest if not the largest green at Fort Weyr and she could certainly handle carrying anything necessary. Lance came to the Bowl, weighted down by the things she was bringing with her.

She didn't allow herself to think of the awkwardness between her and N'kyr at the moment. She had been paired for this mission with another rider who happened to be a trained Dragonhealer and she was ready to help her wherever needed once they arrived at Ista. Lancelle busied herself while she waited with checking and triple checking everything strapped onto Raidenth.

Being a Headwoman's assistant, she was prepared to do whatever was necessary. Today that meant going to Ista Weyr to assist Weyrwoman Belisse in organizing and helping wherever needed. She didn't know yet how she was getting to the Weyr but she was sure the Weyrwoman had a plan for everything and everyone. She made sure to wear comfortable clothes and shoes and not anything she wouldn't mind losing. It wasn't her usual because usually she wasn't dealing with a disaster. She wasn't wearing any of her jewelry either. She then meticulously packed things that could prove useful once they arrived at Ista.

She'd never seen a disaster of any kind and she was, nervous. Well maybe a little more than nervous. She was scared. There were so many things that could be wrong there. It might not even be that safe for them to be assisting even if assistance was needed.

Feeling herself ready and packed, she then heard Nemesenth's voice in her head telling her to meet them in the Bowl. She was a little relieved that it was someone she knew and trusted. Although she should probably have been hoping her fiance would take her and not just someone she knew well. Anyway Z'rim was easily the least difficult of the Bronze four to get along with. And he would make her feel more at ease because of knowing him from other encounters. So this wouldn't be so bad.

She was still feeling reticent though as she walked onto the dust filled Weyr Bowl.

Ramirath's sadness at the loss of dragons, even before they'd arrived at Ista, hit N'kyr hard.  The young bronzerider had to consciously shove the emotion aside, knowing that at least one of them had to keep his head.

Sorry, Rath.  We can be sad later.  Right now we have to concentrate on figuring out what's needed here.  A stroke of the bronze's neck seemed to soothe, but it didn't stop Ramirath from keeping up an almost constant low keen.

Truthfully, it wasn't that N'kyr was immune to it.  No one deserved such devastation, though he wondered that the watchdragons and other weather watchers didn't have enough time to give warning.  Surely they had seen the storm coming?  It was possible it had turned unexpectedly, but if not, someone hadn't done his job.  And he was finding it hard to ignore how such staggering losses could have been avoided if the Istan riders had only paid close enough attention.

It was clear they would need to bring back numerous supplies, mostly clothing and blankets to begin with, so they could help the weyrfolk who were left.  Food and water.  Rope in case it was needed to help pull anyone to safety.  Dragons, at least, were good for search and rescue, especially as they were large enough to lift much heavier objects than their human riders.

They'd need healers and medical supplies, seeing as those at Ista were still taking stock of what they had available, what had escaped water damage.  It would be faster to bring in fresh bandages and numbweed than it would be to wait for the Istan healers to find it all.

We are returning to Fort.

Ramirath's melancholic instructions weren't unexpected-- N'kyr was sure D'nier had assessed what he needed to of the situation within the first few moments after arriving at Ista.  With another stroke to his bronze's neck, the pair then waited for the signal to go between.

--------------------

The young bronzerider wasted no time in gathering supplies when he received the new orders from his Wingleader.  He hurried to the infirmary, then to the lower caverns, then back to his weyr to retrieve the extra straps necessary for other passengers and excess cargo.  It wasn't long before he was joining his wingmates in the weyr bowl and waiting for his own passenger to arrive from the lower caverns.

Drudges, kitchen workers, and apprentice healers were starting to haul supplies out to the waiting riders, the extra hands necessary to bundle and pack cargo.  Chaos it might have appeared to be, yet the people of Fort Weyr rallied to help their fellows at Ista.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Tashamoretta was loading Sionnath's saddle bags and nets with supplies from the infirmary.  Saddened though she was for the people of Ista, the entire situation had her energized.  She needed no klah to keep her energy reserves up-- she and her green were ready to go as soon as N'kyr or D'nier said the word.

This was a mission she'd been waiting for-- not boring old formation drills, like they practiced so often.  Today she might be able to use the skills she'd developed on her own, with Sionnath-- risky maneuvers that might be put to good use in trying to rescue someone.  Of course, they would require she left her assigned passenger on the ground, along with the supplies, but they'd have to do that anyway once they arrived at the island Weyr.

Surely they wouldn't all have to remain with their allotted non-riders, would they?  With the Ista dragons still there, they had to have enough to help ferry people and supplies, right?

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Ramirath was as anxious to return to Ista as Sionnath and her rider.  The bronze was barely patient as N'kyr strapped crates and nets to his sides.  Hurry!  They are waiting for us to return.

I know, Rath, I know.  With a couple of good yanks, the Wingsecond pulled a buckle taut, then moved on to check the other straps again.  Tell the others to check in with you when they and their passengers are ready to go.  And tell those that are not yet here in the bowl to make haste-- Ista needs every moment we can give them.

D'nier

Entering the Weyrleadership office to find Karene pacing, D'nier's expression softened into something more apologetic than the limn of worry that had become of him earlier.

"Sorry. I didn't mean to startle you." A briefly audible and partially defeated sigh parted the Weyrleader's lips before answering the woman's question, "It's worse, I fear. There's no clear calculation of losses yet because everything is still in chaos, but I left Wingsecond L'mar in charge of continuing to organize things there. That'll give Ista someone to report to and to take orders from until we can relieve him.  As for the condition of the Holds on the island, I don't know what we're looking at just yet, but have riders dispatched to investigate and see if we can offer at least minimal aid in the form of transportation if need be. I figured you might agree with my sentiment that the Holds can figure out how to deal with their own problems. It looks like we'll be days just trying to sort through the mess at Ista Weyr.

"Ah, and I saw Belisse taking off. Did you end up deciding to send her there? I have given orders to each of the Wingleads to get people and supplies together and over to Ista Weyr as soon as possible, and if Belisse will be there ahead of them, that will be helpful. Things may calm down a little just having Jeneveth present. That should make it easier to deal with the crisis overall, on that front."

Pausing for the spans of one or two breaths, just long enough to gauge Karene's expression. "Unless you need me here, I would join my wing before they leave for Ista. But if there's anything further that I can do to help here, then I'll do it. Otherwise, I'm just waiting on reports back from those investigating the situation of surrounding Holds. I suspect if Belisse and L'mar need anything right away, they know how to contact us."

Maybe it was anxiety or hidden grief leaking through the man's usual stout but laid back comport, but if not for Karene's sake, to inform her of anything she may not yet have known, then he'd certainly been thinking out loud in a long and steady stream of thoughts. However, he thought to end it there before Karene did so herself.

S'dric

Nicath had always been attentive to the younger Raidenth, the lifemate of his rider's cousin, so when the Green keened with the rest of them, the Brown showed his concern. Just as aware as his rider was, that a difficult past still plagued the Green Pair, Nicath didn't need the encouragement from S'dric to take the initiative to help watch over them. They were wingmates and they were family, after all.

Raidenth? Is it very difficult for your rider? I am sure S'dric will ask soon if she feels well enough to fly to Ista. That is where the dragons have died, and the pain of loss will become nearer when we get there. Is her hurt still deep? Please tell me if I can help be of comfort to her.

The fact that both Lance and S'dric had been there for one another through each their own hardships, as best they could anyway, had given Nicath the chance to caress Lance's conscious mind with the warmth of that abundance of dragonic love that her own dragon doted upon her; and it was that very (additional) abundance of shared, warm emotions that Nicath had hoped would help lift her out of depression or sadness when it came over her. He had touched Lance's mind in the past, and he found no need to refrain from doing so now, should the need arise. He felt just as close to Raidenth and her rider as S'dric did.

Nicath's eyes still whirling slowly with unconfirmed worry, his rider was fairly quick to catch on to the taste of it there on the dragon's mind.

Everything okay? Did something happen with Lance?

Tightening down the straps on another haul of cargo, S'dric was about to start makes rounds to ensure that the newer additions to the wing were prepared for departure. A handful of their wingmates had stopped him in his work to assist them already, so even if they'd already checked in with N'kyr, he thought it would be good to double check with them in person, just to make sure no further issues cropped up. There was one particular pair that he wanted to check on one last time, whose passenger was apparently afraid of heights, and dragon backs counted as 'high'. S'dric had made the woman swap with another healer, putting her on the back of the smallest green in the Wing, hoping that would help.

So while he finished up his own preparations, the Brownrider thought he may as well start his 'rounds' with Lance. It was second nature to wonder after her emotional stability, yet at the same time, S'dric was more trusting of his cousin than he was of many of the other riders in their wing. Anyway, trusting that Lance was likely one of the first to be ready to take to the skies, it was probably best to start there anyway, just to give others a little extra time.

I'm going to head over to make sure that our terrified healer is okay to fly, so let me know if there's anything that Lance needs.

Sparing a glance over his shoulder at the Greeen pair, it didn't seem as though anything were amiss, but by the same token, he knew that Lance was just as good at internalizing her sorrows as he could be. For a long time, it had been their goal to be more open with one another about those sorts of things however. That had been part of the process of healing for both of them.

Z'rim

Nemesenth had already alerted Indylari that she would be riding with them. The Bronze had not been happy at first, knowing that someone else would be coming along for the ride, but to Z'rim's surprise, given the Bronze's aversion to humans in general, his Bonded hadn't been as irritated as anticipated, when informed of who their passenger would be. Indylari'd somehow become an exception. Perhaps because of her relationship with the Bronze Four?

Z'rim rushed from the Bowl to collect Indy, after getting everything else prepared for their departure. Through the bustling crowds of people who all darted about on their individual little missions to fulfill their own role in the rescue of Ista, Z'rim almost ran right past the girl, not having seen her. Of course, it was almost difficult to recognize her with the change in clothe. He wasn't used to seeing Indylari in such... understated attire. Somehow, his eyes were a little disappointed in the change. She was a lovely girl, and the casual suit did not do her justice. Indylari however, was not his woman; she belonged to S'jiro, and there was no reason for him to be finding her attractive anyway.

"Ah. Indy! Are you ready? I've got Nemesenth loaded down with supplies. Is there anything more that you'll need to bring?"

The Bronzerider stopped himself before grabbing onto her hand to pull her in the direction of the weyr bowl in a hurry to mount them both up so that they didn't hold anything up. But instead, he moved on ahead of her to clear their path through the throngs, "Nemesenth is waiting for us over here."

She listened to his report, full attention on what he was saying. Karene wanted to be wrong when she thought that things might be worse than they thought but as usual, she was right. Frowning a little at that, she decided his plan wasn't a bad one but then they both knew what they were doing at this point in their lives.

"Yes, Belisse and Ambriel have been sent with their Golds. Since they had already prepared to work together it seemed for the best. My only concern is how close to rising Jeneveth is." She was worried about the dragon and not the Weyr at Ista when she spoke of it. Naturally it would be good for Ista to have a clutch sooner than later.

She didn't say that she had already spoken with both Goldriders to prepare them for the immediate transfer and the chaos. They were actually quite lucky to have already been preparing to start anew. Nodding, "I have things well in hand here. Galadrieth is listening out for Jeneveth and of course Taroth, should anything be needed. So far it seems they are at the Weyr safely and Ambriel has joined them. So I'm sure they will meet up with L'mar soon and they'll begin to get things under control." Which of course would take some time.

Putting her hand on his shoulder, to show support she gently squeezed, "Be careful and make sure Taroth knows that Galadrieth is available if he needs anything." The Gold could focus on him and her daughter from a distance with some effort but it was not impossible for her.

Thank you for your concern and S'dric as well but I think we all know Lancelle can handle anything. Even if it means dealing with difficult emotions.
The green responded, almost as fiercely determined as Lance herself was. They were not the sort to let what they were feeling cloud their duty or their desire to help Ista's inhabitants. In fact, their past only seemed to help drive them at times like this. Yes they were sad and made even more so by the thought they might lose even more dragons to disaster but dragonriding was never meant to be easy. It was a challenge to be a rider, because they were often put into danger to protect the rest of the world.

Lance would not have that any other way. She only hoped that her friends and family came through this alright. There might still be danger at Ista with the force at which the storm had hit them, there must be collapsed and collapsing caverns and other hazards. She wasn't afraid for herself because she simply never worried about her own life as much as other people. Raidenth's survival though she tended to put first.

Looking over at the other greenrider she had been paired with, she hoped the woman was a good healer because she had a feeling there were dragons who would need her help. When they arrived at Ista, she would find out. This was a great way to see who in the Wing was worthy. She only hoped to live up to expectation.

When the signal was given, the heavily burdened with supplies Raidenth vaulted into the air and within moments was in position above Ista Weyr.

Upon hearing Z'rim's voice, she turned around. "I'm ready." She nodded, The things she packed fit easily into one carry on, so the dragon shouldn't be overly burdened. "I have the one pack but that is all." With all the riders bringing supplies, she had had to pack less than she thought she would. Still better to over pack and be prepared than not have things that were needed.

She followed the Bronzerider without a word more than was needed. He wouldn't be able to hear her anyway over the others in the Bowl which was busier than she had ever seen it before. Of course she wasn't accustomed to riding dragons either so when they made it to Nemeseth, she waited for Z'rim's instruction and gave him her pack to be strapped onto the dragon.

Indylari was not very tall, she was actually slightly below average height for a woman which made the large dragon a little bit intimidating for her to try and climb up on. Hopefully she wouldn't make a fool of herself. Appearances meant a lot to her normally but she most certainly didn't want to embarrass herself in front of one of S'jiro's closest friends.

N'kyr waited for each of the riders in Empyrean wing to check in before he relayed a message to Taroth, asking if the Weyrleader would be joining them before they left.  When Taroth responded in the negative, N'kyr sat up straighter in his harness.  It would be up to them to lead the wing to Ista, then, since D'nier was still busy relaying information to Karene.

Taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly, the young bronzerider checked with his own passenger, then glanced over the riders ranged behind them.

Ista is waiting for us.  Be extra sure your passengers' straps are secure.  Losing cargo is okay, losing people is not.  From another dragon, the instructions may have sounded like a joke, or a teasing line meant to lighten the mood of the situation.  But coming from Ramirath, it was likely more a reminder from his rider that the bronze dutifully relayed-- even if N'kyr had meant it as a side note for his own dragon and not something to pass on to the others.  Of course, everyone knows that, but it is good to have the reminder.

If anyone noticed, N'kyr was faintly shaking his head as Ramirath blathered on.  It didn't matter that riders in their wing were likely used to it-- the bronzerider just hoped his dragon would eventually catch on and not take everything so literally.

Not that we need the reminder, because we are dragons, and carry people all the time.  But-- Oh!  Right.  We go!

The running commentary cut off as the bronze unfurled his powerful wings and launched into the air.  And as soon as the rest of the wing had followed suit, N'kyr gave the signal to go between.

---------------------------------

The still-heavy winds and residual rain buffeted them as they came out above the bowl of Ista Weyr.  Despite the relatively short time since they'd helped scout the area with D'nier, the atmosphere was already noticeably calmer.  The presence of two queens, even foreign ones, was helping to soothe the panic and pain felt by all.  It would make efforts to tend the wounded and rescue the trapped easier, and hopefully ease the troubled minds of those who'd been caught in the middle of the terrible disaster.

We land there, in the cleared space, Ramirath informed the others, having spotted someone on the ground waving his arms to direct them.  Jeneveth tells me there will be personnel ready to help unload and point the healers to the temporary infirmary spaces.

As carefully as he could, so as not to damage any of the cargo he was laden with, Ramirath set down in the bowl and dropped low in an effort to make his passenger's dismount easier.  N'kyr was quick to slide down the bronze's shoulder and help the woman climb down to the ground, where they both tackled the nets full of supplies.

This will not be enough for everyone, will it?

No, Rath.  But we can get more.  And the other Weyrs will bring food and water and supplies, too.  Or so the young bronzerider could only assume.  Dragonriders, he'd been told time and again, took care of their own, even if they did have their personal differences.  Because in the end, they would be what kept Pern safe, no matter what anyone else believed.  And if they didn't look out for each other, who else would?

N'kyr, of course, was somewhat skeptical that the other Weyrs would return the favor had it been Fort that had suffered such a devastating loss.  But until such an event happened, he'd never truly know.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

((OOC: I believe Tasha was with Falyn, so for now I'll assume my greenrider is helping the dragon healer down and unloading her supplies.))

D'nier

The Weyrleader found himself nodding, appreciative of the fact that Karene was already one step ahead of the game, having two Golds ready to take over at Ista.

Silently considering her words about when Jenevith would rise again, D'nier's one good eye turned down to focus on Karene's hand briefly, as it landed on his shoulder, giving a squeeze. That same amber orb peered up at her after, as a disquieted sigh came ushered through his lips with the next words.

"I trust in Belisse and Ambriel both, to bring order back to Ista, but I have the feeling that restoring her back to her original state will be like trying to rebuild Igen. We should probably send word to the other Weyrs and start coordinating all of our efforts. I'd like to see others contributing more to Ista given that we have dedicated a lot of resources already to rebuilding Igen -Telgar Weyr has, too; and we're already stepping up to donate a Queen -One who may rise very soon?"

With a pause, D'nier met Karene's stare with dubious concern, "We may want to prepare for the eventuality that other Weyrs may complain that we are using this as an opportunity to expand Fort's influence and our own interests. That along with our spearheading the efforts at Igen Weyr. It will only add to any criticism of our effort by those who disapprove.

"We may also want to consider that this may postpone the reopening of Igen Weyr. Or we may want to garner more support from Weyrs in other regions so that neither Fort nor Telgar Weyrs are down so many riders. This could definitely add fuel to the fire for those who opposed the rebuilding of Igen to begin with."

The Weyrleader's focus seemed distant then, as Taroth informed him of N'kyr's going between with the rest of their Wing to Ista already. They had certainly made quick preparation to leave.

"It seems as though some of the Wings are already taking off with the first of the supplies. I should join them."

Z'rim

Z'rim would have laughed if he'd known Indylari was at all worried about adding any additional burden on the dragon. Nemesenth was a strong, stocky beast who certainly looked every bit as fearsome as a fire-breathing dragon from Terran legend should. The Bronze was limning with the kind of power that no Blue or Brown could ever hope to attain; the very corded muscles and defined lines of his great sinews awarded Nemesenth a very burly appearance. The dragon's brow sitting heavy over luminescent eyes and the broad, squared shape of his head only completed a countenance that caused him to seem more unapproachable. Even his name, Nemesenth, indicative of 'Nemesis', reflected what might have been an unsavoury nature if left unchecked by his rider. Thus, the thought that any burden would be too much for the Bronze, would have quickly been dismissed by the pair. Nemesenth and his Rider both knew that there were a scant few things on Pern with the ability to overcome them. And additional supply loads were not amoungst them.

Seeing Indylari hesitate at the dragon's side, Z'rim moved to her side with boisterous steps.  Helping her mount the great steed, he stood on the dragon's forearm to offer an additional hand up into the saddle. "Don't be afraid. He just looks mean."

Z'rim chuckled and clapped the bronze on his flank, granting a bit of affection so that Nemesenth knew he was teasing. The Bronze rumbled though, under Indy as she settled into place, his rider securing the pack she'd brought along, directly after. Soon however, Z'rim had climbed astride the dragon, taking his place infront of Indy.

Ensuring that both of them were strapped in and prepared for takeoff, the Bronzerider looked back over his shoulder at her, "Are you ready? If you want, you can hang onto my waist. I guess if you're not used to it, it might be a bumpy ride."

Honestly, the dragonrider wasn't sure how many times she'd flown in the past, nor how comfortable she was with Riding adragonback. But, though Nemesenth was capable of wonderfully smooth landings, he tended to spare little strength in making an.. well, to put it nicely, a rather enthusiastic takeoff.

If one weren't prepared for it, it could be a little jarring.

Even as Z'rim awaited her reply so that they could confirm their readiness to the Wingseconds, he could feel the Bronze move beneath them; the dragon's weight shifting and wings taking a momentary stretch before the signal came to take to the skies.

[Kate, in your next post, you can put them in the skies and arriving at Igen and such.]

S'dric

Alright. Thanks Nicath.

The outcome of the Brown's brief conversation with Raidenth was relayed and since S'dric had decided long ago to trust in his cousin's judgement, that she wouldn't put herself at unnecessary risk, he didn't stop to question their reassurances that they would be just fine.

The Wingsecond continued his rounds of final checks to make sure there weren't any other issues with passengers or the additional supplies loaded up with each pair. When he was confident in their preparedness, S'dric leaped up to settle himself on Nicath's neck ridge so that they could await N'kyr's signal to take flight.

Karene listened to all he had to say, pretending she hadn't already thought things through to get everyone involved. Of course she was using this as a way of expanding her influence. In all honesty she wasn't much troubled by what the other Weyrleaders thought of her at the moment. She had been ready to send support before they had and being closest, she felt it had been expected of them.

"Zorayda knows that Igen will be postponed. Galadrieth has already seen to contacting the other Weyrs and having the leaders coordinate what they are willing to send in order to support Ista."

She had no need to comment further except to say again, "I have everything under control here." Honestly, she had been a Senior Weyrwoman much longer than he had been a Weyrleader and if he kept going over every tiny little detail, like she couldn't have possibly thought about it herself, she was going to deck him in the jaw.

"The Wings need you to coordinate at Ista." She said, gently suggesting he leave. "Go." And the go, might have come out a little more sternly than she meant it to. Well when he got back, she would make it up to him by thoroughly debriefing him on all of her correspondences with the other Weyrs.

Since she wasn't able to go out and lead the wings herself, she had to manage the diplomatic things that were involved. He should trust her to do her work, as she was trusting him to do his.

Galadrieth was much more congenial, Be safe. Since it wasn't apparent that Karene might be concerned for the Weyrleader, Galadrieth would make it clear that she wanted Taroth to come back to her undamaged.

----

Indylari was snapped out of her concern about actually being able to get aboard the beast by Z'rim's offer. With demure grace she placed her hand in his as he helped her up to where she could sit. She didn't argue that she wasn't afraid of Nemesenth and that she had been daunted by the task of mounting because neither reason for standing there like a dim glow was at all appealing.

She noticed how easy Z'rim made it seem to mount the dragon, watching in a hidden awe. Dragonriders were impressive. Even S'jiro, whom she had no real affection for was impressive around Zemarith. In fact now that she was thinking about her fiance, she felt a little unsure of whether putting her arms around another man was at all appropriate, even given the circumstances. However, she wouldn't be any good to him dead either.

Her arms came lightly around Z'rim's chest. Her head was much closer to him than she felt comfortable with but she felt she wasn't really acting in any way that would be considered inappropriate, at least she didn't feel she was. She wasn't as prepared as she thought she would be when the enthusiastic Bronze took to the skies, at the sudden movement, she held on tighter, her head sideways against Z'rim's back. In fact her entire torso was pressed against him. His body was hard like a rider's should be but unlike some others, she found herself most embarrassed by a sudden influx of desire.

She was glad he couldn't see her from where he was as she would have been blushing from her embarrassment. As they came out of Between above Ista, she pushed aside her curiosity and irritation at her own attraction and found herself focusing on the task at hand. Ista's devastation would soon be something she would be witness to.

Indylari waited to loosen her hold on Z'rim until the Bronze had landed. And like any lady should, she waited for him to offer to help her off the dragon before she made any move to do so.

---

Raidenth, true to orders came out from Between above Ista and immediately established where she would land. Once on the ground, Lance and Serenth's rider paired off and walked into the rubble filled Ista Weyr. The greenrider was determined to help get her wingmate to the dragon infirmary. They were going on foot because the ledge to the infirmary was crowded with injured dragons. Packs were strapped to both riders as they made their way through the devastation. She could see where people had been crushed by stone.

D'nier

It wasn't as though D'nier doubted the Weyrwoman's mental capacity to come up with those thoughts on her own, he was simply thinking aloud to ensure they were both on the same page, and make sure they had all their bases covered. Saying everything aloud also help him to make sure he wasn't leaving anything out.

In any case, after hearing the impatience in her tone that spoke more volume than the few words she'd selected just then, the Weyrleader found himself nodding. He was also ready to re join the wings at Ista -and see to it that Belisse and Ambriel were well under way to having the situation under control. Once they had a foot hold on the order of things there, he could also assist, by pulling the remainder of Ista's healthy, flight-able dragons together into temporary groups that could be organized to assist in the rescue efforts.

"Alright. I'll be returning to Ista then. We'll be sure to catch each other up on events when I get back."

As he was leaving the office, D'nier heard the echo of Galadrieth's voice just before he felt Taroth's doleful but lovingly appreciative croon in response to the Queen. The Bronze was still touched by the loss of many dragons, but his mate's well wishes were a comfort in light of everything else.

The Weyrleader was soon in the skies again, and had appeared over the bowl of Ista to seek out the place where the others were landing to unload supplies. The great Bronze swooped into the weyr's bowl to land nearby, his rider smoothly dismounting in the moments after.

Taroth, let Belisse and Ambriel know that I am here. Find out where they're at and I'll join them shortly. I just need to make sure N'kyr and S'dric are okay to continue with the Wing's assignment until I've seen to it that Ista's own functional riders are organized enough to help with the efforts.

He had spoken to a few of those riders earlier, but needed to get a better count of how many able-bodied dragonmen and dragons were at their disposal.

[annnd ehhh, yah, tha'ts all i got for him for now Wink]

S'dric

Landing in formation, S'dric was soon assisting his passenger on the dismount and then unloading the supplies that they'd brought along with them. In that time, he'd hardly focused on the devastation around them, but when he and the man brought with him were both laden enough with supplies that they could head inside to help the rest, S'dric knew that it was going to be a trying day for everyone. It was difficult to take it all in, the sheer scale of destruction; unlike anything he'd ever seen before.

And with the pain of loss all around, it was difficult to maintain composure and not want to break down and grieve with those who'd lost loved ones.

Lancielle ahead of them, S'dric was about to start off after his cousin -or at least on her trail- when the Weyrleader called for himself and N'kyr. So, sending his passenger on ahead, the Brownrider had the man follow after Lance with the promise that he'd catch up to them.

Z'rim

For some reason, Z'rim felt very aware of Indylari's hold on him as at first she was timid about the need to do so, but as soon as Nemesenth took off, her body was firmly against him. Had it been any other woman grabbing hold of him so tight, he could have thanked his lifemate for the jolting takeoffs, but since Indylari was his passenger, the Bronzerider reminded himself that he wasn't allowed to find the kind of appreciation for their closeness than he might have otherwise. Indylari being his best friend's fiance, Z'rim simply attributed his desire to have her safe at his side (or in the saddle with him so to speak) as no different than simply wanting to secure her safety for S'jiro's own interests. After all, as friends, they should look out for one another -or one another's interests. Which in this case, was looking out for Indylari.

Z'rim felt himself regretting that they had to land though, when her arms left him, and quickly, he tried to correct that train of thought. Indylari was a very lovely young woman, but she was not someone that he could hope to be with as long as S'jiro took an interest in being with her. Letting his thoughts wonder for just a moment though, Z'rim wondered what he might do in the instance that S'jiro messed things up between them and Indylari was better left in someone else's care? Would he step in and risk S'jiro's wrath and Indylari's rejection to try to pair himself with her instead?

Z'rim couldn't believe that such thoughts existed within him. What kind of strange desire was he harboring? This was his best friend's fiance he was thinking about. Did he really find her as a person attractive, or was there some other force at work behind his seemingly sudden interest in her? Or perhaps those thoughts had always been present? Perhaps their nearness at this point in time simply brought it all to the forefront of his consciousness.

Clearing the thoughts from his head, the Bronzerider had dismounted and was now offering a hand to Indy so that she could climb down.

"Here. Give me your hand."

"Yes, when you return you shall have a full report from me." She agreed. And she would want to know everything that had been going on at Ista. In the meantime, she had dispersed the older Weyrlings with messages to the other Weyrs as well as Holds so that they would know of the days losses and what might be helpful in restoring Ista Hold and Weyr to its former self.

D'nier was smart enough to know when to allow Karene her space in dealing with things at the Weyr. This could be why she had allowed her Gold to become so attached to Bronze Taroth. His rider was a lesser of evils in her mind so Galadrieth felt more comfortable with his Bronze in return. The Queenrider though, made no attempt to be anywhere as sweet as her Gold.

Maybe when he returned she could explain her impatience. It wasn't that she wanted him to leave Fort. She was however in a rush to get everything in order and patience had never been her strongest quality.

((In the meantime, Karene will be communicating with the other Weyrs about sending aide. Telgar sends one of it's Wings to help Halcyon with the Search efforts.))

---

Lance wasn't paying too much attention to who was behind her as she was focused on getting the other greenrider safely to the dragon infirmary. They would be needed. Lance could assist if she was told what was needed, of that she had no doubt. She was fit enough to be of use, lifting things too.

When they finally did make it through the passageways to the Infirmary, the mixed smell of blood and ichor was almost overwhelming to her. She wobbled on her feet for a brief moment as memory started flooding her vision. Not again. She thought, trying to regain her composure. The deaths of her Weyrling class repeated in her mind as one by one they died, crashing into the mountain and going Between. The chaos and smell of the blood and ichor were triggers to her memory. Raidenth however was aware instantly of her rider's distress and sent her soothing feelings. To the dragon, the past was in the past and they should focus on moving forward.

One of the healers set a red wort stained hand on her should steadying her.  "You'll get used to the smell." He whispered and walked away. He was right, the smell was already starting to bother her less and less. Of course that would be the obvious assumption, that she couldn't handle the smell. She didn't like appearing weak but rather that than having people ask her about the accident.

Her partner was already moving to tend an injured blue, so she waited to see what the other woman might need.

---

Indylari would not have thought Z'rim capable of doing anything to jeopardize his friendship with S'jiro. She certainly had no idea he was feeling anything about her at that moment. If she knew it would make no difference, she was going to marry S'jiro or become a fallen woman in the eyes of her family. Even if she felt nothing for her fiance at all. It didn't matter how hard either of them tried it seemed. Honestly she wished he had kept his little farm girl and forgotten to even notice her. Then she'd at least have an excuse for having thoughts about another man.

She looked down demurely as she could manage, averting her eyes from his gaze as much as possible. "Thank you." She said softly, moving her hand to his. All the while thinking she was being quite silly. Maybe she was a little a silly but she genuinely never thought she would have such thoughts about anyone and so now she felt anything she did around Z'rim was going to be seen in a bad way. Like everyone could read her thoughts.

Once she slid down off the Bronze, she didn't think of removing her hand. "I'll be needed in the Lower Caverns." She said, thinking that was where Ista's Headwoman would be. Her life as a minor Holder's daughter had left her with the talents of running any area of domestic chore and being able to do them herself. No doubt she was going to be of use anywhere they required. And in doing so, even if exhausting, she might make herself more esteemed of the Headwoman at Fort. Maybe she would be considered for the next Headwomn. Even if S'jiro wanted her to be mother and wife and stay at the weyr, she didn't think that was what she wanted.

N'kyr shoved his hair back for the umpteenth time since he'd arrived.  Having removed his helmet before he dismounted and helped his passenger down, several pale strands had escaped the queue he usually kept tucked into his jacket.  And while he wasn't at the moment worried about appearances, he was the faintest bit frustrated that he had no time to fix the problem and prevent the annoyance.

He was almost finished unloading Ramirath's nets.  His passenger had already been drawn towards the infirmary by one of Ista's healers, so the job had been left to him and whatever waiting arms he could find to carry the supplies to their designated places.  Those arms seemed to be fewer now that some of them were involved in tending to the injured and helping other riders with their loads, but he was making do.

Of course, the last few crates proved difficult.  As they snagged in the nets, the young bronzerider was tempted to cut the ropes to quickly get them out.  But that would be a waste when he may have to return to Fort quickly to acquire more food or medical supplies.

Just another minor annoyance to add to his frustration with the entire event.

Such loss of life that surely could have been avoided.  Such devastation that surely someone had seen coming…

D'nier's call would have been a welcome one if he hadn't already felt frazzled.  Ramirath crooned in sympathy, but the bronze's sadness wasn't really helping his mood.  So N'kyr closed his eyes and drew in a deep breath through his nose, trying to ward off the snippy words that wanted to roll of his tongue in his dragon's direction.

Letting it out slowly enough that his thoughts remained under his conscious control, he opened his eyes and finished freeing the last of his cargo.  It was quickly handed off to a waiting carrier, leaving N'kyr able to head for the Weyrleader in order to make his report and receive further instructions, his mussed hair the only outward side of his agitation.

Z'rim

"Of course. I should probably see that you get there safely. They say some of the lower caverns had flooded with all the rain. There could still be the danger of rock falls, too." Though Z'rim wasn't certain just how great the danger of such a thing was, he had always looked out for S'jiro's best interest, so the same would be the case now. Not to mention, should something happen to his best friend's fiance when he'd been entrusted with her for the time being, S'jiro would never forgive him.

Thus, Z'rim, cordial as ever, looked about, finding the open corridors leading to lower cavers before offering her a hand, if she needed it for stability. The ground was still wet, and the stones slick under foot when they got there. The Bronzerider had renewed his focus on the task at hand however, and dind't bat an eye at the awkwardness that could have coalesced between them. He was only doing his duty.

S'dric & D'nier

Signaling for his passenger to continue ahead of him, S'dric watched the woman hurry off in the same direction that Lance had headed -toward the infirmary- before turning to give his attention to the Weyrleader.

"Sir?"

The distance closed between the three men, the Weyrleader and both Wingseconds, before D'nier spoke again.

"Carry on as I initially ordered; continue bringing supplies if these aren't enough, but make sure the wing is helping unload them and get them where they need to go so that the staff we brought with us can put it to use right away. I'll have the other wings that arrive doing the same.

"Plan to bring more help with you when returning to Fort for more supplies. The residents here will need their rest. If they're not injured, they're tired, so we should help accommodate for that. There should also be fires going in the lower caverns again soon, so food and klah should be set out soon, to keep everyone's energy up.

"I'm going to be in the Leadership Office sorting through and trying to organize all this mess along with both Queens that were sent, in hopes of calming the chaos further, so if you need anything, that's where I'll be kicking back." Of course he said it half-jokingly, his tone revealed rueful intent. "So, until order is restored, Empyrean is all yours. I trust you to it."

THe Weyrleader didn't want to take any more of their time than that, and would inform other wings as they arrived, of the same thing based on need. And when he and his Wingseconds had said all that needed to be said for the time being, D'nier briskly excused himself and made his way to that official post of command to relieve L'mar of his duty there. Then he could join his own wing.

((Lance is helping in the dragon infirmary at this point))

---

Indylari nodded, "I would appreciate your escort." At first she had no intention though of taking his hand. It wasn't that it would be the improper thing to do in a normal situation. In fact, normally she would have taken his hand without a thought but she was trying to limit her physical interaction with the Bronzerider.

Especially seeing as just thinking about the ride back made her uncomfortable. She didn't understand what made Z'rim attractive to her in a way that S'jiro wasn't to her. They were both well off and Bronzeriders. They were friends, hung out with the same groups of people and they had similar interests in life.

She wondered if that was why she had such trouble with S'jiro though. Whatever she had felt when she had her arms around Z'rim, she'd never felt with her fiance and not for lack of either of them trying. It would be better for all of them then, if she distanced herself from Z'rim when she could afford to, like right now.

As she walked a little ahead of the Bronzerider, she heard the faintest rumble from above her and a splattering of dust started to cover her. Shards! She thought, thinking the cavern might just be about to come crashing down on her. She was frozen in fear, she didn't want to die here!

With Indylari's hand in his, Z'rim escorted her toward the caverns, directing them around puddles of water left standing, that were too large to want to walk through.

The Bronzerider's mind was trained on where they were going when dirt and flecks of stone began crumbling over them. Z'rim felt it gather in his hair and on his face before glancing up to see what it was, and happened to glance up just in time to witness the first chunks of stone broke free from the edge of the cliff. They were about to get caught right under it!

"Rock fall!!" Calling out in warning to others around them, there was a near immediate scramble that came with shouts or screams.

Squeezing Indalari's hand, Z'rim jerked her from the path and whirled the girl around, putting her back to the cliff face nearby them. Pressing her flat against the rock wall, using his own body to shield her, Z'rim placed a hand over her head as he tried to loom over her in an effort to keep anything from hitting her by chance. Of course, most rocks that fell, would end up hitting the side of the cliff that they fell from and bounce away, leaving a zone of relative safety at the very foot of the cliff; as long as they kept as close as they could to it. And anything that fell straight down, would likely not hit them if they could make themselves a small enough target.

The weyr had obviously been more damaged than she thought. Indylari felt and reacted to Z'rim's pull immediately. She didn't know why he was whipping her toward the wall at first but once she did, she moved more quickly. There were rocks falling, she was aware of albeit only by sound as Z'rim had her body completely protected from the falling rocks.

She felt herself grow more and more uncomfortable with the proximity of the Bronzerider. It wasn't Z'rim's fault, of course. She didn't really know her own sudden attraction for the man but having him so close again was really difficult for her. What was worse? He had just probably saved her life. Or at the very least saved her from irreparable injury.

When it sounded like the rocks had stopped, she didn't know what she should say. She didn't move the entire time he had her pressed against the wall. If her heart rate had risen a little, it could easily be explained by the adrenaline of dealing with this disaster. Casting her dark eyes up toward Z'rim's, she tried not to sound any different than usual, "You saved my life. Thank you."

Maybe it seemed odd to thank him. It was what dragonriders were meant to do. But she thought about all the issues she caused in Z'rim's life where it concerned S'jiro and knew he could easily have let S'jiro off more easily by allowing his fiance to die. Not that she thought Z'rim would ever do anything like that but she knew exactly how much she complicated S'jiro's life.

For some reason his instinct was to embrace her, glad that she was okay -but he didn't. His hands were on Indylari's shoulders in the next moment, meeting her eyes momentarily before seeming to examine her for any injury. The Bronzerider said nothing though, and shortly had spun about to see if any others had been caught in the rock fall.

Dust still settled over them, so he glanced up, cautious in those first couple of steps that he took away from the wall, "Is everyone alright?" It seemed there were only a small number of people that had been near enough n the vicinity to warrant any concern, but after checking with each of them briefly, Z'rim returned to Indy.

Z'rim reached to take Indy's arm in a moderately firm grasp, wanting to keep her close to him, just in case. His touch may have been controlling in a sense, but his tone carried the concern he must have felt for her. His voice was gentle. "Let's move to the lower caverns. It should be safer there. I doubt there will be any danger of rock falls."

Indylari sensed for a moment his concern. She would have embraced him too if it were at all proper for her to do so. And she immediately felt ashamed for thinking it at all. Admonishing herself, she collected her emotions and tried to act like she wasn't at all shaken by anything. Even if she could use almost being crushed by rocks as an excuse, she didn't want to.

There was obviously something wrong with her. She would just have to deal with her "issues" when she got home and try even harder to love her fiance. While Z'rim took control of the situation and made certain no one was severely injured, Indylari waited. He didn't seem to want her to do anything till the status of those around them was ascertained.

It might not surprise him but Indylari had been brought up with a certain amount of authority from men pushing her from being brave enough to do some of the things she thought to do. Her spirit wasn't crushed but she had been kept lower than her male counterparts at home on purpose. So his grip on her arm, while not intentionally intrusive, almost impulsively had her arm going limp and moveable. She didn't say that it bothered her because she had never been allowed to be bothered by more domineering men.

His voice brought her back to looking at him though, instead of the ground they walked on. "Oh. I hope so." She didn't want him to be in danger any more than he wanted her to be. If anything she would prefer him inside sooner to keep them from losing another dragonrider. They were too few and to lose more would certainly be bad. At least, she convinced herself that was the reason she wouldn't want him injured or killed. "It is a good thing I have you to rely on to get me there." She said with a kind smile. She appreciated that he was escorting her, rather than having her go it alone.

So far, it appeared as though he was right. Any rock falls seemed to have been only on the outside of the caverns, not within. Though, he was still cautious of slippery stone underfoot and peered up overhead from time to time, just to make sure.

A time or two, Z'rim's hold on Indylari's arm tightened reflexively as they came to periodic slick spots so that if she were about to lose her footing, he could save her from the fall.

"Be careful. Looks slippery here."

Even as they continued down interior walkways that were lit for them by glowbaskets, there were puddles to be found. There was no real way for the water to escape after it had been flushed into the caverns by heavy downpour, so in some places, water still stood stagnant, where it would slowly dry out. They'd just have to hope Ista didn't get any more rain.

Z'rim's longer legs then let him navigate over one such small pool, at which point he'd had to release her, but turned back to reach for her hand to help her across. "Here, I'll help you across."

She was somewhat relieved at this point that Z'rim didn't read into things as much as S'jiro did. It was nice not to worry if she was betraying what she felt on the inside with her face on the outside. Even if he could read her emotions, it was a rather traumatic day already and they'd barely gotten into the Weyr. She could only imagine the injuries, turmoil and chaos that they would see in the Lower Caverns.

Indylari forgot that Z'rim had hold of her until he would suddenly apply pressure. She figured out quickly that he only did so to protect her and so she made no mention of the pressure on her arm. His concern was once again, quite touching and gentlemanly. She would never expect less though of someone who claimed to be of some status and rode Bronze. They were practically bred to be gentlemen, at least on the outside.

Which brought her to thinking about her interactions with Z'rim in the past. He always seemed to be the more easy going of his friends but he was in no road boring. She wondered for a moment why she didn't know more about him. She should. Or maybe she had convinced herself a while ago not to think about any men but S'jiro. Try as she might, it seemed that was impossible. Especially in the current circumstances.

Suddenly having let her go, she watched him find a way past a puddle where he was reaching to help her to the other side. See now that was exactly the kind of thing she found attractive. "Alright, I'm trusting you." She teased, just slightly because well, why not? He was supposed to be a friend, wasn't he? And he had already proven to her that he would do anything to keep her safe. She felt very secure around him because of that alone. Her physical attraction was simply a side bar at this point.

Her hand reached until she clasped hands with the Bronzerider. "I'm not used to being the damsel in distress." She said with a smile but she supposed so far she had needed a good deal of saving. When she was over the puddle she didn't hurry to remove her hand. He really could do what he liked with it at this point. No one really had to know if he held her hand a moment more than was proper or if he didn't. He'd likely do the right thing because he cared about S'jiro. If only she could find something that would endear her to him.

True. They were supposed to be friends. That would have been natural given their common circle of acquaintances. Though admittedly, he only knew so much about Indylari, seeing as she tended not to get too tied up in what went on between the Bronzerider foursome on the whole. Her entire interaction there, it seemed, had been based on her limited relationship with S'ijro.

Z'rim smirked, letting himself seem amused by her commentary on being the damsel in distress. Letting the comment draw on his own thoughts, he wasn't really sure he'd ever thought of Indylari as a damsel in distress or not; either way, he could always use the excuse that right now it was more as though one of his best friend's trust was reliant on his ability to keep the young lady out of harm's way. Thgouh... in reality, Z'rim didn't find himself disapproving of the concept that perhaps Indylari might be the damsel in distress from popular tales, who in the end, could only be impressed with her daring dragonman's bravery. Everyone knew how those tales ended -and it they didn't end with the daring dragonman giving the girl away to his best friend.

Suddenly, the thought kind of irked him. He knew very well that S'jiro had no particular feelings, however hard he tried, for Indylari. His friend had confided in him that it was a matter of frustration for him that Indylari seemed to feel the same way -lacking in that loving emotion that most soon-to-be-wed pairs often shared. But at least they were civil with one another. Indylari might consider herself lucky on that note. They'd all seen what could happen when S'jiro didn't like someone.

Not that the Bronze foursome on the whole didn't contribute to their image on the whole. S'jiro wasn't alone in his bullying tactics, but none of it had ever sat very well with Z'rim. He didn't care as much as S'jiro or Sh'nar whether or not 'commoners' showed the utmost respect for them here. The Weyr was different than the Holds and common folk became more equal. Even drudges were treated with more respect at the Weyrs than within the walls of a Hold.

All of those thoughts led to even more dangerous ones. Such as, what if he chose to like Indylari instead?

Of course, he had to stop himself short of that kind of thought, even though it persisted at the edge of his consciousness. Even Nemesenth would have felt it -that moment when he began to waver, and consider things he probably shouldn't.

Taking Indy's hands he helped her leap over the standing water across their path, incidentally drawing her toward him when she landed. Though it had been more to be sure she was on solid footing, he happened to draw her up against him almost like they were dancing. To keep either of them from losing their balance, his arm had quickly slipped around her back for support, though his other hand still held her own. Their sudden closeness was intoxicating.

The Bronzerider realized this, swallowing his breath for a moment before he breathed in again; all he could be aware of was her pleasant scent, and of course the proximity of their bodies to one another.

The hesitation in his speech may have told of the nervousness and onslaught of physical desire that overtook him just then, but he continued to look into her eyes,... searching. Both for forgiveness (for putting them in this situation and then desiring her) and acceptance (of he and his sudden feeling for her). But he couldn't have both.

Where had this feeling come from anyway? Had it really so abruptly come over him just now, or had some other feeling for Indylari been fostered over time slowly, only just now coming to recognize it? He didn't know, and he wasn't sure he cared which, but the longer he stood there holding her, the closer he found himself leaning toward her lips. He could feel her gentle breath, and found himself wanting nothing more than to kiss her. If he could, he wanted to tell her that she didn't have to be stuck with a guy like S'jiro anymore. She didn't need to be with someone that had abusive tendencies whom she felt nothing for. They were at the Weyr, shard it!

Instead of kissing her though, Z'rim's hand tightened on her own just enough to indicate that he might be terribly torn -between friendship and personal desire. There were certain boundaries he didn't want to cross, and challenging his friendship with a childhood friend like S'jiro was one of those.

Still, it was hard to let go of something that he was gradually realizing he wanted for himself... when no one else seemed to value it. Could he really be the only one who was willing to see Indylari for the person she was, and not a piece of property? Sure, he didn't know her that well personally, but it saddened him to think that someone who seemed to have much deeper, hidden truths about them would be treated in such an uncaring manner. As though the world thought they could simply overlook her as a person, just because of the circumstances of her birth. And he wanted to make that hard reality disappear for her. If anything, that was the best way he could think of to protect her.

Swallowing the urge to kiss her for at least the second time, his lips still lingered near her own, so it was obvious that he was fighting to keep the desire at bay. So, if not just to distract from that desire, he spoke just loud enough that it were between the two of them. Though, perhaps even his words just then, were a little out of line, having been emboldened by his thoughts previously. "I can't say I've ever imagined you as that type." Damsel in distress, that was. "But isn't that what you've become? Now that you're betrothed to S'jiro and your wedding is being planned? I can't claim to know the depth of your feeling for him, but I know enough by the way you two act around one another to speculate that the two of you don't love one another. That you shouldn't be together. So,... pardon my saying so, but doesn't that make you a damsel in distress?"

Z'rim's hands still held her with relative firmness, hoping that if she tried to pull away from him he could keep her from it. Because if she did take offense at his words, then it was his guess that he hit closer to home than Indylari wanted to admit aloud to anyone, or perhaps even to herself. And if that was the case, perhaps he wasn't so averse to kissing her right then, just to prove it to her that he was right.

Z'rim was almost hoping for it.

In a time of need [Tags: Empyrean Wing! Secondary: Karene and all wings] 6c0ab3c1-6139-48cc-99bf-38fa8b3896bb_zpsttyphgjo

Not expecting him to steady her by holding her quite that close, she felt her skin tingle with warmth where he touched her. Taking in a breath of air in her surprise at the movement of the Bronzerider, she didn't say anything. He would never do anything that would compromise her honor. Z'rim had always been the honorable one, hadn't he? She seemed to remember him staying out of most of the childish pranks and bullying the others seemed to partake in. He was certainly less likely to be doing something of that nature. So she knew that drawing her in this close had been for the purpose of keeping her from falling. Convinced of this fact, she waited a moment to see if he was going to let her going. He had no such intention in that moment, she thought, looking up finally to see his face.

When she did look up, she was not expecting him to be looking at her with desire. Was it apparent on her own face? She felt her cheeks grow a little warm and wondered if maybe it was only natural they felt this way given the circumstance. Was it wrong to admit to feeling something like this for someone other than S'jiro? He had feelings of this nature for someone else too. Which only made things more difficult because he always had someone to compare her to. Whereas, like all Ladies, she had to remain chaste and true to her fiance. That he didn't seem to appreciate how difficult that was given where they resided was not lost on her. And she had been so good at avoiding men she found herself looking at, though they were few and far between.

Now though she didn't know how to respond to Z'rim. She had been fine when she thought the attraction was one sided. Of course this behavior was completely unacceptable and she shouldn't forgive him but she wished fervently she wasn't a lady in that moment. She couldn't give him any of the answers he wanted because it was clear from her breathing, flushed cheeks and dilated eyes that she was feeling the same desire for him. She wouldn't however condone their physical attraction and lean in where his lips were to kiss him, even if that was what she really wanted to do.

She always was aware of her engagement, which Z'rim luckily brought up instead of kissing her though it was clear to her, he was fighting that desire with great difficulty. Still he wasn't allowing them any space. No, she didn't really want space from him but at the same time it was completely wrong. Who would see them there though? And if they did, they wouldn't necessarily know what was going on between them. It could appear as if Z'rim had just saved her. Of course he'd already saved her.

While she used to be a lot more meek when it came to her own opinion, she had become a little better at asserting her thoughts when she felt attacked or belittled. The willfulness she had in her young life had been beaten out of her, quite literally. So it took a good deal of trust for her to give anyone her honest opinion. Generally she went along with what other people wanted her to in order to avoid conflict. Z'rim couldn't possibly understand how trapped she truly felt by her engagement. She was terribly unhappy and knowing that unless she Impressed a Gold, she wouldn't amount to anything other than a wife and mother, bothered her more and more. She couldn't even wrap her head around how desperate to get out she felt on any given day. That Z'rim had hit that sore spot with his talk of her being in distress only reaffirmed what she already guessed. Z'rim strangely understood her better than her own fiance did.

She put on the act that she had trained herself into. Her voice may have faltered at first because she really wanted to be honest with Z'rim but she couldn't allow them to continue like this. Z'rim could just as easily break her heart as any of the other Weyr men , after having his way with her.  Her engagement kept her safe from such misadventures. She convinced herself that it helped her more then hurt her.

"Oh, well I don't see it quite that bleakly." Her lie was hard to tell but it sounded exactly like something her mother would tell her to say to avoid making anyone look bad. Then for good measure, "S'jiro can be very charming..." She said, struggling to come up with compliments toward her future husband. "It is difficult on both of us."

Indylari could see it being even more difficult for her now. Why was Z'rim so close to being hers and yet out of reach. She could have him, if she wanted. She'd never wanted a man so much before in her life. Not ever. Had she not been in her right mind, she would have done something completely crazy like kiss him but since she was capable of rational thought she kept herself from it. Whatever this was between them, they would have to push it aside.

Indylari's refusal of any inclination to kiss him when their lips were so close, was only as convincing as her words, that perhaps he'd thought wrong in all of this. Of course, her hesitation made him wonder, but her tone, well rehearsed, brought the doubt back to his mind.

In the moment after however, he thought carefully about her choice of words, and there was nothing she'd said to make him think that she had any great affection for S'jiro.

"No, you haven't thought of it that way, because you've both been told that being together is your duty. To your credit, and S'jiro's as well, you both think highly of duty to the Holds and your families still -but is that all you aspire to? Does that duty alone fulfill you as a person? What will it take to convince you both that you don't have to be bound to the Holds anymore?"

Z'rim paused for a breath, continuing to gaze deeply into her eyes though he had only set himself apart from her by a few inches more, still leaving them close enough to feel the heat of each other's bodies. His hands had not left her.

"I don't believe that you care for him, nor that being married to him is the life you want. But you've never had to think about it 'bleakly' because there's always been the chance that Impression would release you from the promise of marriage. But what if you don't Impress this time? The possibility is still real. Are you really okay with marrying him if that happens?"

The Bronzerider didn't mind if his words may have seem too forward; he was concerned that the worst case scenario would be exactly what happened. And then what? Would she settle for unhappiness forever? Hoping one day that she and S'jiro would like one another enough to 'manage'. At this rate, they'd live miserably together. And for what? Their duty was to the Weyr now.

The entire procession of thoughts, one after the other, made him angry. He hated to see both either of his friends like this, and was becoming more and more convinced that letting them go through with it was a bad idea. Even if they both hated him later, it might just save them their sanity in the long run.

Without warning then, Z'rim bent his head to kiss her. He didn't exert more strength than necessary to bring her all the way to him, because he wanted to let her know that he would only be gentle; but at the same time, he needed to prove to her that there was nothing good to come of her current relationship with the other Bronzerider, and that there was still hope for happiness elsewhere. The Bronzerider's lips met her own, fully and without remorse. It was a kiss full of fervency which, after allowing her a moment to ease into the embrace of his arms, he would relax his arms enough that she could pull away from him if she wanted. Honestly, he wasn't sure what kind of reaction to expect.

Though, he himself felt as though he could go on like this for an eternity. Indylari's body felt so small up against him -he wanted to protect her always. Her lips were soft and warm, and as he inhaled her scent again, an even greater pulse of desire coursed through him. He wanted to be like this with her for a long time but... would she give in to the rhetoric of their upbringing and say no?

Z'rim seemed to be full of surprises. Certainly she wasn't ready to hear what he said next. The more he voiced what she already feared in her mind, the more she wanted to cry in his arms. She was more distressed than she thought she was. S'jiro was not a bad person. She never had meant for either of them to be miserable but she knew that was where they were headed.

Her dark eyes were filling with tears as he said what she knew was the truth, but they were both rather trapped in this. It wasn't like her parents were unsupportive of her being at the Weyr but there had been conditions when she was first permitted to leave home. So far she had been very good at sticking to those conditions. She had done everything they had told her to. Including remaining engaged to a man whom she could not love. Did her parents love each other? She didn't think so. But as Z'rim pointed out, this was the Weyr, things should be different.

She wouldn't deny that her wishes had changed since her arrival at the Weyr. That she had thought beyond being a wife and mother to an influential person. How could she admit that to him though, when his best friend was S'jiro? How could she tell him that she had been happy when S'jiro had been with Veyani? That she had hoped it would mean him breaking off the engagement so she would be free and it wouldn't be something her father could say was her fault. And she was blamed as much as her mother and sisters were blamed for he had no sons.

About to tell him exactly why she went through with her engagement, she was taken back by his sudden action. In his arms, mouth pressed against his, she was too shocked to do much of anything. The moment that followed was completely out of her control as her emotions were out of control. She knew her eyes closed as her mouth responded under his. Even as his grip loosened she felt no reason to move.

When her mind did catch up to her body, she moved away from him suddenly, pushing her hands against him for more force. Visibly shaking from her desire, she opened her mouth to talk and shut it again.

"Z'rim." She started somewhat breathless. Not knowing what to say to explain her actions, her feelings, she was as honest as she could be. "I am drawn to you." She didn't know how else to say it, "But I am engaged to your best friend and even if it is a very unhappy situation for the rest of my life, I don't know how to get out of it." And the tears from earlier returned, "If I don't Impress and I must marry, why not S'jiro?"

She wasn't giving up a comfortable future for a lustful feeling.

It actually surprised him that Indylari seemed to return the kiss -at least for a good long moment. It was enough to be encouraging anyway, even without her reaffirming words after the fact.

At first, he wasn't sure what to think when she pushed away from him then, but it was quite obvious that he'd upset her emotions after prying so deeply into all the issues surrounding she and S'jiro's situation. Though... he hadn't intended to make her cry. Maybe he should have been more sensitive.

Sensitivity wasn't going to remedy the situation though. Sensitivity had only made things worse, and no one was benefiting, regardless of what their parents thought. Z'rim knew as well as any of them that there were ways of making compromises to suit the needs of all sides. Their families were friends and needn't put this kind of burden on their children -especially not after they had already taken up places amoungst Weyrfolk.

In Z'rim's mind, the betrothal between S'jiro and Indylari was more of an easy-out when their parents simply didn't want to have to take into consideration other possibly more difficult negotiations that could have had the same outcome. It was unnecessary and they very well knew it.

Z'rim's eyes rested on Indylari with gentleness but there was certainly a sure determination within them. The tension within him seemed to have been let go with his next breath, after having heard that she too, had feelings for him. But he had started something and wasn't about to let it all stop there. He owed himself that. He owed his friends that. They could hate him or thank him later -he didn't care which. This was for all of them.

As the Bronzerider spoke again, he posed himself as the stalwart champion that most had probably only guessed he could be. Being somewhat reserved for a Bronzerider, rarely overtly asserting his authority or 'superiority', he tended to be overlooked, or maybe underestimated in some ways. But this time, that wasn't going to happen.

"Indylari," For the spans of two breaths he paused for emphasis. "Am I less a man in your eyes, than S'jiro? You know that my blood is as worthy as his, when it comes to qualifications for marriage."

He paused again, seeking something from her expression as he went on.

"If I were to ask you to trust me, would you? I know you and S'jiro are both trapped in this right now, but I think I know a way to get you out. If you can trust me then, I will do everything in my power to make things right; to make you happy. And then, when it's all done, you and I can decide our own relationship for ourselves.

"You'll be free, Indy, and I won't hold you to anything you don't want. So, whatever happens after that, will be your own deciding."

Since Z'rim had previously let her go, having given her some space as she started to cry and think through things while he spoke, he now reached back out for her, bringing a hand up between them. He left it suspended there so that if she decided to trust him, she could take his hand, and together they would take a chance on a better future for themselves -and for S'jiro, too.

Maybe he shouldn't have expected an immediate answer, but even if she told him she'd have to consider it, and answer him later, as long as she chose to take his hand by her own choosing, then that was better than nothing. It meant that if she did not Impress, there was still a chance for happiness.
