Cold Prostpects [Tags: Amilyn and any at the Settlement! Open!] Jungi30_zps716714e9

With permissions from the Telgar River Hold's Lord Holder to try to pick up some new trade partners, Jungi left his winter quarters that day, with a zip in his step, so to speak. The prospects of building new relationships in order to drive new business, was enough to put any wise Trader in a good mood. In this instance however, Jungi was only partially sure of what he might be able to expect, once he got to visiting with the newly registered Crafters in the Settlement, who would now be participating in the Hold's open gather markets.

Though Jungi had his extent of experiene in the Tradecraft far and wide across Pern's central region of the Northern Continent, only a small fraction of his business had been with Crafters from outside the hold's walls, who were not registered under the local jurisdictions to do business. The Holdless or otherwise wandering, vagabond Crafters were generally viewed as unable to Guarantee the quality of their work because they did not settle down to work under a Master consistently, and if they feared retribution for poor quality in their works, they could simply up and leave, taking their goods elsewhere. And though it was known that there were plenty of good folk around Pern who simply enjoyed a life on the road and chose to live that way, there was always the question as to how they ended up that way. It was hard to know whether or not one had been Exiled for some crime, out of another Hold. So, indeed, to some, it was simply too much of a risk, buying from Holdless, to want to invest in buying their goods; and thus, for Jungi, a reputable Trader who had to Guarantee what he brought in trade, it was difficult to want to do too much business with the Holdless.

Here in the Settlement however, it seemed as though there were plenty of Holdless willing to settle down and find a new appreciation for the benefits that Hold life could offer.

Looking at his list of Crafters to track down, he started off toward the Gather Square, where they would all be setting up their stalls still, this early in the morning, and busying themselves with offloading goods from their carts onto display stands, where gathergoers could browse them.

Maybe if he was lucky, he wouldn't only get to make some new business contacts, but also happen to run across some of his friends, like Ariadne and Lyria.

[Ending first post there, just to leave it open for anyone in the settlement go enter their characters for a gather weekend. Including Amilyn! Open to all!]

Amilyn

Cold Prostpects [Tags: Amilyn and any at the Settlement! Open!] Ami2_zpsaa8fb6cc

Amilyn was starting to feel a tad dizzy. Her face felt warm, her ankles felt cool, and her pants were riding a bit too low on the hip for her taste. Moreover, judging from the metallic tang in her mouth, she was fairly certain that she had bitten the inside of her cheek.

“Hey! Hey, you!” she called from the alleyway as Jungi passed by. Motioning for the passer-by had set Ami to swaying. She was suspended upside-down by a cable. It was wrapped around her, pinning her legs together at the knee with one tangled in the mix while her feet dangled limply to either side.

“Give a gal hand, yeah?”

OOC: For reference, you can always tell who is an exile. They are called The Shunned. Once they are found guilty of a crime warranting the title, they are branded with an ‘S’ on their forehead with ink made from the Bluebush plant. Its ink is permanent like a tattoo. It is shown in “Dragonsdawn” and “Dragon’s fire”.

KAEUL
and companion Altair

Kaeul heard the door close to her brother's quarters next door. Beside her bed, on the floor, Altair's head perked up as he heard it too. A low rumble in his throat said he wished he could explore the sound, but his duty to his mistress kept him at her side. "Easy, Altair, it's just Jungi." she murmured, rolling over and away from the dog. Even as she closed her eyes once more, they sprang open again. They were at the Hold again, and she was free for the day to explore so her father had told her the day before. Not to mention it was a Gather day, in a sense. There were probably people in the square setting up their wares for the day. It was possible for her find a few good deals on things she needed before the crowds set in. The idea of it had her up in moments, throwing on a dress. It was a pretty blue affair, blue silk that shimmered in the sunlight with a colorful overtone. It reminded her of the wing of a blackbird with it's colors. The woman pulled a comb through her long hair and put half of it up behind her head, leaving the bottom to flow free. It was a proper look, she decided, and she knew her father would approve of her ladylike outfit. A pair of thick hide boots with their furry lining to protect against the cold completed the first of the outfit. Golden eyes gazed up at her with an excited expression, Altair had long since learned that shoes meant she was going somewhere. And when she went somewhere, so did he.

Kaeul smiled down at him, this was his first time at the Hold since his young puphood and he was too young to remember the time then. He had spent much of it carried in a sling at her side while he regained his strength and grew older. He was a turn old now, and his training was going to be put to the test while the woman took him through the Hold. "Alright, ready?" she asked, slipping his harness of the peg by the door. She had made the leather harness after those that attached the drays to the wagons in the caravan. A spare metal ring sewn into the back of it allowed her to hook a lead to him in an emergency. Two more graced the sides in case she needed to hook them for pulling. The dog stood, head facing the door as he allowed her to put the harness over his head and between his legs. It was well made enough that when needed, she would teach the dog to pull some weight when the caravan took off later. She would pad it later, she thought, if it came to using it for pulling. When he was well settled, she gave him the hand signal for 'sit' and had him wait until she had opened the door and entered the corridor. A sharp snap brought him to heel and Altair looked up at her with his head cocked.

"We get to explore today," she told the dog, not really expecting him to understand her words, but his whine of happiness made her smile and she returned her attention to following her brother out. He was too far ahead of her to catch up to while remaining ladylike, so she looked once more at Altair, giving him the command for 'track' and saying her brother's name. Since he was still in sight ahead of them, the dog took off at a run and stood beside the man for a moment before finally giving a sharp yip to get his attention.

The sound of a woman's voice met Kaeul's ear as she made her way closer to her brother. “Give a gal hand, yeah?” she whistled for Altair, who gave a tug at Jungi's sleeve and released him to return to his mistress' side. The woman turned down the alleyway, surprised to find a woman hanging from a cable by her legs. "Shards!" she said, rushing toward her. "What are you doing up there?" she asked, looking at the woman. Upon further inspection she noticed that the way the cable held her, the woman's pants were riding rather low. Kaeul stepped up onto a nearby crate and took hold of them, pulling them to a much more appropriate place on the other's body. "Well, the least I can do is protect your ahh.." and she paused, trying to think of something she could say that wasn't crude. "Anyway, at least you wont expose yourself now." she finished lamely.

Looking up she tried to find how the cable held the woman and saw a thick rafter with the cable stretched over it. Surely there was another end... With an unladylike jump, Kaeul's feet met the ground once more and she followed the line to the other end, hidden behind stacks of crates. The knot holding the cable taut looked too solid for her to undo alone, and she hoped her brother would be along soon. "Sadly I don't think I'm strong enough to undo the cable," she called to the suspended woman, "But hopefully my brother will heed your call as well."

While she had been looking around, the dog had wandered closer to the hanging woman. A cold nose touched her forehead as he sniffed her. He looked to Kaeul and gave a gentle whine of concern. This wasn't normal, right? He had never seen someone in such a position before. She snapped again, giving him the heel command again, and he looked back only once before doing as she asked. Kaeul sat on the crate she had used to pull the woman's pants, and gestured with a flat hand for Altair to lay down. They would await Jungi, and failing that, she would try to cut the cable with her utility knife to release her. "I'm Kaeul and this is Altair," she said by way of introduction, "who do I have the pleasure of meeting today?" she asked, smiling. The greeting wasn't stiff, perse, but it was more formal than the occasion had need of.

Altair's familiar yip greeted his ears just before that of Amilyn reached him. Heeding the brief pull on his sleeve, Jungi grimmaced, grumbling at Altair about chewing his good clothes -even though the canine's tug on his shirt hadn't been damaging.  He'd been about to look back to see Kaul there, but as she rushed past him and into the workspace where Amilyn hung from the ceiling, his attention became distracted.

Help her? Well unless they got the woman down from the rafters, her unbelted trousers would only start to slip again, seeing as how the ropes pulled at the fabric of them where she was suspended midair. So, eyes following the same path that his sister's had taken, it was offhandedly with a bit of a sigh that Jungi thought out loud. "Well I can't do both, catch her and cut the rope."

Going to search for where the rope might have been tied off at to see if he could lower her down gently, it was apparent that there were simply too many things in the way of getting to the end of the rope, he turned back to Amilyn and his sister, further assessing the situation. "To loosen the knot where she's tied, one of us would have to relieve the weight on it, but I don't think just the two of us could manage it, so I'll stand on the crate to cut the rope. Kaeul, you'll have to try to break her fall." Knowing his sister  was strong, he still wasn't sure if she'd be able to completely catch the hanging girl, but it was all they could do.

Stepping onto the crate beside his sister -the same one she'd just jumped from- Jungi reached for his utility knife, as he generally kept at least one with him. There, his arms raised overhead, one hand taking hold of the rope to steady it, and the other bringing the knife to its strands so that he could start to cut at it.

[Those who are allowed into the Holdless Settlement are not First-generation exiles/ shunned. I know I have never yet specified the Qualifications that must be met by those who are allowed to settle at the Settlement -because so far no one has asked or wanted to make a character that was an Exile versus Holdless- but it is not extended to those who themselves were already shunned for a crime. It is only open to what generations of descendants may come after them, who themselves were not guilty of a crime; and to the guilt-less wanderers of Pern who have simply preferred a roven life vs one that was settled down. so.. no one will see any "S" foreheads in the Settlement because they are not welcome.

I have specified before, that the Dissidents from the rebellion, when captured and if not killed in the past, (or maybe if they were family, but not perhaps guilty themselves) were marked with a small brand on the back of their shoulder so they would easily be recognized if they were caught again..

BTW, Razz Suri, Pern doesn't have silk bc there are no silk worms -at least as far as I can remember. We may have to ask Marc to confirm that. Because of that, when first starting this site, I'd actually thought about the Weaver Hall coming up with a 'new' kind of luxuriant fabric that is very soft and silky but made of wood pulps; so it might be more rare and expensive. But fabrics like that -like Rayon- are considered "man made silk" and may be the closest equivalent on Pern. Some algaes are used to make threads shine more, so that's a possibility too. However, fabrics made from wood pulp fibers instead of other plant fibers are generally more flammable.

Not having silk is one reason I always default shiny fabric to some sort of Satin(i should say Sateen but it's just satin made of plant fibers instead of silk worms). The gloss on the thread is achieved by "mercerising" the fabric while keeping the fabric stretched so that it doesn't shrink. For the Man-made-silks (out of wood pulps instead of other plants like cotton or hemp) the plant fibers don't always have the elasticity so, though they're very soft and breathable, they wrinkle more easily because any folds in them start to break the plant fibers -they don't bounce back to their original shape without some ironing.

RoF Pern setting does have a Wood Smith craft and does not consider wood as a 'scarcity' necessarily, though it is not considered nearly as large an industry as the Mine crafts and Metal Smith crafts put together, seeing as the broader preference is naturally for mining/ masonry/ metallurgy/ stone cutting/ etc types of trades. Though it's been a while since I've read through all my gathered info on Pern's trees and plants, from what I remember, most of Pern's trees are Hardwoods. That doesn't necessarily mean they're dense woods, though they're generally harder to cut through, but that they are either Fruit-bearing or Nut-bearing. Which means food in the wild is quite plentiful and would lend itself to not only harvesting for food but also for use by weaver craft and other trades who could use the fibers of the plants and shells of seeds/nuts for twine, rope, cloth, production of charcoal and tools, etc.

If you want to give her a dress of man-made-silk, that's fine, but likely won't be quite as lustrous as a really good silk-worm silk. But still very soft and airy. And much cooler to wear as the temps warm. It will be warming since it's mid Spring. There won't be much snow left except for in the mountains.]

Amilyn

Cold Prostpects [Tags: Amilyn and any at the Settlement! Open!] Ami2_zpsaa8fb6cc

Amilyn grinned pleasantly at the company. It was nice to have someone address her directly rather than simply leer or mumble about her in tones too low to make out. She had received more than a couple of those that morning already. Overall, people were surprisingly unhelpful. It was like they had never seen a bound and suspended woman dangling in an alleyway before. When asked what she was doing, she replied with a cheerful, "Just hanging out. You?"

Kaeul adjusted her pants, which was good because wind could be a bit nippy on bare flesh. "Oh! Thanks," she said. She leaned far enough to look to make certain that they were in a well-placed location, which was not as easy she one may think given that it was essentially trying to do a vertical sit-up. She was quick to relax back in to her original position. "'Cause I don't need 'em slipping down. Or up. Or off. I got a kid that way once in Keroon, you know." She smiled and nodded. Then a look of confusion passed briefly over her face. "I don't remember if that one made it to term or not. Hmm."

"Right, right." she had not introduced herself. "Ha, manners. Hard to keep the ol' thoughts clear when you've been dangling upside-down all morning. Ah, but you probably already knew that." She held out her one free arm to Kaeul. "Amilyn, Journeyman Smith and Master Inventor at your service. Sorta."

Amilyn waited patently as Kaeul hopped over to take a look her bindings. When she returned, Ami said, "Yeah, I don't think it's coming off as easy as all that. I'd cut it but I lost my bag." She pointed toward the green dufflebag half hidden under a box. When her bag had fallen, it had hit the crate and caused it to tip over atop the bag.

To Jungi, she called back, "I'll be fine. It's only, like, that far." She could not tell just how far down the ground was; her perspective was all twisted around. "Just go ahead and cut it."

OOC: Okay, let's see here....

Shunned. Normally the children of Shunned are also considered Shunned. It is generally applied to a family line and remains that way unless a particular authority figure deems a line cleansed of their past shame. Which, judging from what you say, would be the Lord Holder of Telgar. However, they usually have to be deemed cleansed on an individual basis. for instance, they may unShun a second daughter and her descendants but not bother with her first or third siblings. Its an odd judicial process.

Woodcraft. It is a Specialization chosen by some members of the Smithcraft Hall. It becomes its own Hall during the Ninth Pass.

Silk. The colonists brought silkworm ova with them from Earth. Unfortunately, the mulberry trees (which are the only food source of said worms) did not adapt to Pern's environment. So the silkworms were never thawed.

However, Pern does a native species called Spinners, which are like large spiders. There is sub-species called Gossamer Spinners that produce a webbing that is like silk, but not quite as fine. It is still called 'silk' though. Otherwise, people make due with plant fabrics made from cotton, wool, crushed flax, and sisal hemp, or any of the various leather-based products.

KAEUL
and companion Altair

Kaeul snorted at the woman’s self assurance that she would be fine. She clearly didn’t realize how far up she was, and falling that far on one’s head was sure to cause issues and injury. Strong as the young woman was, she knew she couldn’t catch all of the woman, and so positioned herself to at least catch and cradle the woman’s upper body and head. Amilyn, as she had introduced herself, could handle having her bottom half fall to the ground. She stood and braced her legs to take the extra weight, caring little that it may damage her dress in any way.

Altair paced around them, occasionally looking up at the dangling woman and whining, but keeping his eyes on his mistress. The Beastcrafter woman scowled, she had told him to lay down. “Altair,” she growled at him, “down!” and she punctuated the command with her heel command, pointing toward the crate her brother had climbed on, The sharding dog decided it was easier to lay beside her and had set himself in the path of the woman’s body when she fell. Instead of fighting with the command, she waved her arm away from them and the dog dejectedly lay himself some feet away. She looked over to Jungi, noting that the rope was almost cut through.

The integrity of the structure was flawed by then, more than halfway losing its strands and as Kaeul watched, the strands frayed quickly and suddenly snapped, leaving Amilyn falling through the air. The young woman managed to catch her under the armpits and her top half was buoyed against her Kaeul’s body as her hips and legs fell with great force to hit the ground. Had it been any other situation, Kaeul may have been embarrassed that the woman’s head had been cushioned against her chest. “There now, stay there. Don’t move too fast, you’ll get a lovely headrush with all that blood going back to your body.” she grinned, looking down at the other woman. The striped canine inched his way toward them, still laying down, as if trying to sneak closer. She gave him a stern look and he cocked his head to the side and lay it on his paws, looking intently at the very interesting spectacle before him.

While the two women made friends over introductions, Jungi was still cutting the thick rope, offhandedly thinking that it was a good thing the upside down woman was at least in clothes that kept her from getting too rope-burned. The make of the rope was rough and would have splintered terribly into bare skin.

Screwing his face up into disbelieving expression when the woman went on about the ground only being so far, he wondered if she understood just how much gravity could hurt a person in such a short distance. Her comment about Master Inventory though, was intriguing; and she was a Smithcrafter at that. Her name seemed vaguely familiar, too. She was likely one of the new crafters who'd moved into the Settlement area recently -which meant that she was probably on his list of contacts to make today.

His thoughts took a bit of a turn when the final strands of the rope were loosed, and Amilyn dropped into the awaiting arms of his sister. Relieved that Kaeul had been successful in at least mostly breaking the fall, Jungi put his knife away and stepped down off of the crate.

"Journeywoman Amilyn, you say?" There was some interest that seemed to have been piqued, as evident through his tone. "You're relatively new to the area, aren't you? Just setting up shop here at the Settlement? I happen to be a trader, if you're in need of services to transport between Telgar Hold and Southern Boll. Depending on what wares you have, I may already have a buyer for them, and can take them off your hands. I offer a decent price."

Amilyn

Cold Prostpects [Tags: Amilyn and any at the Settlement! Open!] Ami2_zpsaa8fb6cc

Amilyn eyed the dog as it sniffed her. It was strange to see one up here. Or down there as the case may be. It did not look like it was packing a load. She wondered what it was doing out, then. Maybe they were on their way to retrieve some good and were just going to load it up when they got there. That must be convenient. She had to lug her goods around all by herself. On the bright side, better muscles made for easier metal working.

The smith’s thoughts were interrupted as she dropped a handlength. She swayed as the tether retightened. She bent up to peer at the cabling. The rope had begun to fray. It lengthened a bit as a side-effect. It would not be much lon--.

The rope snapped.

Amilyn yelped as she was sent plummeting. It was hardly much of a plummet, really, as she almost immediately hit Kaeul’s chest. Her feet hit the ground a second later. The impact sent a tingle up her legs. It was followed a moment later by a rush of cold numbness.

Jungi returned and began to speak to her. She kept leaning back against the young woman who had caught (half) of her as she doubted that she could properly stand until the feeling in her legs returned. “Yeah’s that’s me,” she said when he repeated her name and title.

She rubbed the back of her head as Jungi continued. When a lull broke in the conversation, she leaned back to look at Kaeul. “You should invest in more padding,” she suggested. The small-eyed girls did not come with much standard. The poor things. “You’re pretty bony.”

To Jungi, she said, “What kind of goods are looking for? I generally do custom work.” She nodded toward her green bag. It was -unlike Kaeul- large and bulgy, full of junk and materials. “I have a new piece right in there.”

KAEUL
and companion Altair

Kaeul grunted with the effort of holding up Amilyn after the fall, but she managed to prevent her from hitting her head on the floor of the work room. She was reluctant to let her go, not confident that the other woman could hold herself up just yet, or that her legs were steady at all. Instead, she slowly knealt down, holding Amilyn against her and lowered the two of them into a seated position. Her laugh was pure amusement when she suggested Kaeul’s chest was flat, “Yes, well... Breasts get in the way of running, climbing and being able to various other things without having to strap them down.” she grinned. Privately she thought her chest was fine the way it was; the breasts were not too small, but not the massive things that some women sported. They were a respectable Terran B-cup. But the journeywoman had moved on, and unknowingly given a retrieve command when she gestured to the bag some ways away. Altair’s quick gold eyes caught the command and looked to Kaeul to see if he should heed it. The young woman repeated the gesture and the dog trotted toward the bag, grabbed the strap and began dragging it across the workroom floor.

When he reached her, he set it down and looked up to her with a doggy-grin, his tongue hanging from the side of his mouth. “Good, Altair.” Kaeul said, and fished a strip of dried herdbeast from her pouch on her belt, throwing it to him. With a little leap he caught it and sat there. She ignored him for now, she was much more interested in the conversation at hand. Her brother was about to work a deal, she thought, and she wanted to listen. Using the arm she had freed by using the other half of her body to lean Amilyn against, Kaeul slid the bag into the reach of the woman. She wished she could let the woman go, her arms ached a bit from catching the upper half of her body, but if she had had more confidence in Amilyn’s recovery she would have.

Waiting until his sister and the strange lady Amilyn had become untangled from one another, and the Smithcrafter's eyes had turned up to him, granting him her attention, Jungi was silently grateful that at least the delay in their morning's errands may not go to complete waste. Though, it had been an amusing little side venture.

Tempted to cast a side glance to where Amilyn gestured her work was piled, the Trader nodded, thinking as he looked around her shop that the operation she ran here must be either small, since she didn't keep much in the way of overhead costs in lots of goods to be toted around, OR that she specialized in crafting very specific niche goods that were difficult to find elsewhere -or perhaps were very expensive and thus, it was nearly impossible to afford the overhead cost of production before some down payment had been made for her service.

Bringing his eye sback to her, he started again, "I'm sorry I didn't give my name earlier." Smiling, he nodded, giving introduction, "It's Jungi. And since you haven't much in the way of goods readily available for Trade, if you'll tell me just what you specialize in, I may be able to assist in locating more buyers who'd like to consign work from you." Of course, even if she was happily busy as it was with enough work scheduled out that she could hardly keep up with it all, any increase over that would just allow her the need of an assistant to continue to grow her own business.

Smiling amicably, Jungi brought his hands behind his back, holding them together there as he rocked back on his heels a time or two, continuing then to look about the woman's workshop. There were quite a few interesting odds and ends to be found hanging about. He wouldn't be surprised if her work was very special-interest.

In any case, it was safe to say that Jungi was in work-mode now. "Do you mind if I have a closer look at your current project?" Motioning toward the work that lay nearby, he figured taking a closer look at her work and also taking further interest in it was a good start to a new relationship.

Amilyn

Her laugh was pure amusement when she suggested Kaeul’s chest was flat, “Yes, well... Breasts get in the way of running, climbing and being able to various other things without having to strap them down.” she grinned.

Amilyn bobbed her shoulders in response. She had never really considered that there might be a need to strapped her breasts down. She had had then tied down a time or ten in the past but those times had usually been outside of her control. Straps, rope, wires, cabling... they all seemed to have minds of their own. If they wanted to do something, then they usually did it without asking for consent. She was fine with that. Consent was overrated.

"I hear that if you massage them for an hour each morning and again in the afternoon that you can coax them in to growing," she told Kaeul because somethings were less overrated. And those some things got you free drinks when you were out on the town and everyone loved free drinks. Those were like regular drinks but with a better price tag attached.

"I'm sorry I didn't give my name earlier." Smiling, he nodded, giving introduction, "It's Jungi..."

Amilyn smiled. "Oooh, like the plural of 'jungles'." That was awesome. She rarely met people that were named after the landscape. It was a special treat to meet such a person who also happened to be male. Most of the ones that she had come across were so named because they came from a long line of bimbos.

"Do you mind if I have a closer look at your current project?" Motioning toward the work that lay nearby, he figured taking a closer look at her work and also taking further interest in it was a good start to a new relationship.

"No, no.  Go ahead. But my latest work isn't over there." Amilyn paused for a moment as a frown crept on to her face. Kaeul had been right about moving too quickly bringing on a dizzy spell. She did not even remember returning to her shop. The last thing that she recalled she had been hanging upside-down in an alleyway. But now she wasn't. Strange. Not too strange, of course. If she had a coin for every time she woke up in a strange place or had short-term memory loss she'd be one mighty rich chica. Maybe she WAS a might rich chica and she had just forgotten how she had gotten that way. Whoa. Mind equals blown.

And just like that the idea passed. Amilyn slid the clasp on her bag down until it was long enough for her to open the flap. She flipped it over, exposing the junk heap within. She reached inside, burying her arm more than elbow deep inside. She shuffled around sending outs rounds of clanging and tinging.

When she withdrew her hand it was holding a cylinder roughly the length of her forearm and big enough around that her fingers were not quite able to touch.  "Here we go. I crafted this baby last night," she told the pair. She gripped the bottom with her other hand, readjusting her first to slightly above it. She twisted the bottom of the cylinder, which turned independently from the rest of the device. Each complete turn caused it to issue a click. After seven clicks, she stopped.

"Okay, ready?" She depress a small button on the base of the object. The upper two-third whirred as it began to spin. The sides popped up, the paneling spreading apart to become five handlength metal blades. The blade stems were all attached to a center point on the top of the device, and spun fast enough that it was difficult to keep track of any single one of them. In addition to the loud whirring, it managed to put out a good amount of air which cause the inventress's hair to flutter about.

"This," she told them. "Is my Combination Leg Shaver / Wood Whittler."

Pretending not to hear the talk between the girls, Jungi spent his attention on other things until Amilyn addressed him.  Had he heard her internal monologue over his name however, he would have likely laughed or maybe just rolled his eyes with a sigh, seeing as that was the reputation he seemed to have much of the time. Though he would say it was garnered unfairly. He assumed it could sound much like jungles however, so he didn't deny what she said -nor did he feel as though he needed to acknowledge it with a specific reply, either.

Watching the smithcrafter dig through her bag, casting several strange looking objects out of it to get to the bottom, he stood back just a bit as she decided to pull out a peculiar looking cylinder, giving it a few clicks. He was surprised to see a few blades protrude out from its sides and the start to spin.

Wood cutter and leg shaver? Leg hair wasn't that thick.  Well... maybe some was. Still, he wouldn't want to hold the whirring, spinning contraption up to his face, that was for sure. So, maybe it was safer to use it on wood. But, shards, if it worked, that was all he needed to know.

"I'd like to see a demonstration of it cutting through some wood, if you don't mind?" Pausing for a breath, he went on, "What other such devices do you have?"

Amilyn watched the blades go 'round and 'round. She tried to keep her eyes on just one. At the speed that they were spinning it was so easy to lose track. After a couple of failed attempts, her head started to roll along with them. It did not make it that much easier to keep her eye on the target. To the contrary, it seemed to only make her dizzy, enough so that when she looked up at Jungi she could almost believe that there were two of his head slowly orbiting each other. Her eyes traced the outer of the two Jungis.

"Right-right. Sure." She pushed herself forward, stumbling a step to the right before she found her footing. Her legs were still tingly. Each step felt like a burst of needle pain in her calves. She circled around Jungi. Wood was still fairly easy to find. The Weyrs had not come to purge it all yet. She made her over to a vertical hardwood beam. It was one of a pair that were supporting the ceiling brace for the stall's cloth awning.

Her device was starting to spin down, so she twisted it a few more times to reset its speed. She placed it against he beam. Ribbons of wood flew away. Her device whined as she put some weight behind it. The blades slowed much more quickly when she leaned in to it. It managed to slice a groove nearly half a fingerlength before it came to a stop. The fans folded back against the cylinder, all except for the one that lingered inside of the wood beam. The last one returned to its place when she yanked the device free of the beam.

Amilyn turned to look at Jungi. "So, yeah. There you go." she said. She waved her empty hand toward the gash in the wood. "It's made for whittling, not cutting. Except for leg hairs --which it is made to cut-- but it is more efficient at cutting those. I think. I haven't tested it." She held the cylinder out to Kaeul. "Would you like to?"

Kaeul stood, her legs tingling a bit where the woman had rested, and pulled up a handy stool to watch the interaction between her brother and the Master Inventory. She was fascinated watching the device activate, the whirling blades cutting a decent groove in the wooden beam before it got stuck by one and was turned off. That thing was made for leg hair? Silently the young woman thanked the Egg that she had never really been one to grown an overabundance of body hair and that her legs were usually very smooth. That device would never come near her legs. Reaching down she lifted the edge of her dress, baring a hair-free leg, “I don’t think it would do much but make my leg look like that beam.’ Kaeul grinned. Unlike her breasts, she knew her legs were shapely and pretty. Long hours in the saddle of one of the Caravan horses, or running, climbing, tracking or training with Altair kept them in good form.

“You should see if Jungi wants to try it, I’m sure he has something more than I do for that device. What do you call it? Can we see more?” Kaeul was intrigued, if the woman could invent that, what else could she make? From his place away from the three people, Altair attempted to army-crawl closer, his head cocking from side to side at the whirring device when it moved. She caught him, giving him a look, and the dog whined and stopped moving. His large head lay on his paws and he looked up at her pleadingly, wanting to be near the two people he did know. “Would you be able to invent a harness for pulling weight? For a dog, that is.” the woman asked, curious what Amilyn would come up with given the chance.

Kaeul had a pretty good idea of what she needed to make it herself, and intended to do so regardless of if the other woman took on the challenge, and one of the Leathersmiths had worked with her on a good price and design based on the weight harnesses for other hauling beasts. Altair was a large dog though, and the man had been interested in seeing the end result. His huge, lean body (like that of a Great Dane) was unique, built for long distances, but Kaeul figured she could train him to pull a smaller cart or something.

As Amilyn's device chipped away at the beam, sending wood splinters and dust flying, the trader shielded his eyes with one hand to keep from getting any stray particles of wood from flying into them. After a moment, he even turned his head away, taking a step back. When the strange whirring sound stopped and the smithcrafter went to winding it back up again, he looked back in her direction.

"Well, it does seem to work on wood at least." After overhearing his sister's suggestion bout having him give it a try, Jungi took a hand to stroke his smooth-shaven face. "I think I'm all good here. Maybe we'll test it out on human hair next time."

Pausing to hear Kaeul's suggestion that the smith might be able to assist in the crafting of a creative lead for her canine, he thought that it was a pretty brilliant thing of her to come up with. He was always impressed with his sister's creative ideas. It wasn't unlike her to ask him to help in implementing them somehow, but in this case, Jungi wouldn't be of much help, it was true. He knew little about animal harnesses.

Amilyn had been hoping that Kaeul would try her device. She usually did these things on her own. It would have been nice to share that experience with someone else. Having a second opinion on her creations would have been a wonderful help. It might cut down on the number of mistakes that she made, although if she were to be honest with herself, it probably wouldn’t. Even if it did, the sheer number of errors that she came across on a daily basis would work to mask any positive results that she would have received due to the feedback. Still, it would have been nice to have someone take the hit now and again.

When Kaeul hiked up her dress Ami understood. “Oooh.” She nodded slowly. There was no way that Kaeul could have given her leg shaver / wood whittler the proper run that it deserved. She did not have anything for it shave. She was practically bald down there. It made everything so clear. “I see. So are you intersex or do you just have faulty endocrine system?” The poor thing had no hormones. No wonder she was the way that she was. It was sad. Amilyn pitied her.

And just like that, it passed. She turned a happy grin toward Jungi. “You can test it,” she assured the man. “It’s not for faces. You should not put it anywhere near your face. That could be a touch dangerous. You could put out an eye. Those things don’t grow back. That is why I designated it for legs. There is nothing to worry about down South.”

It was right about that time that she notices Kaeul was still speaking. Amilyn turned a blank expression upon the lass. She had been so caught up in her own thing that she had blocked the young woman out. “Huh?” was the only reply that she had to give.

Well, Jungi hadn't come here to be the guinea pig in some smithcrafter's experiments, so he held up a hand in decline, gracious as he could be, before either of the ladies could go on. He and Kaeul did have other crafters to pay visit to all in the same day, and had little time to be wasting where it would not turn into profitable exchange. Thus, Jungi was growing more and more impatient with the smithcrafter. "I feel as though I'd have to see a device made safer for such use, before deciding to market it to those who have come to trust me to provide them with only the best goods available. Were your device to make quicker work of chopping through wood while doing so cleanly, I might consider it, but this does not create the clean cuts I'm familiar with seeing in the wood smith craft."

Pausing for but a breath, Jungi continued, wearing his usual, charming smile. "If there are no other inventions that you have on hand to demonstrate, then please let me consider your skills and I will come to you whenever I have found someone in need to call upon them. We do have a few other stops to make today, so unfortunately, I am unable to take too much time today, to appreciate your most interesting works."

"The best goods available?" Amilyn half turned away from Jungi. She gave him a hard stare with the one eye that could still see him. He was giving her the impression that he may think her undeserving of the title of being the best available. It was something that she was used to. People did not fully appreciate her genius. For that matter, people generally did not see her genius at all. Some people even thought her to be less than sane."Have you seen a better Combination Leg Shaver / Wood Whittler? Because if there is one that done the task better than my own, I would love to see it for myself." Then she could st--- BORROW ideas from its design to incorporate in to her own. Then hers truly would be the best available.

Seeing that she recognized his possible doubt in the value of her smithing masterpieces, Jungi listened to her through, before replying in thoughtful pause and then folding his arms over his chest.

"Alright. So that you know, I am always looking for new and potential talent in any craft." Because that gave him an edge in his trade. "It seems to me that you have many good ideas, but until you have refined them for prospective buyers, there is no way I can rightfully market them to prospective buyers. You see, I stake my reputation on the goods that I trade facilitate the trade of." Jungi took a breath before going on.

"How about I visit you again in two or three months, when I've returned to Telgar, and if you can come up with a more efficient design for your tools in that time, I will invest in consigning several from you. But, what I need to see is a wood whittler, as you call it, that can effectively make a clean cut through a wooden beam like the one you demonstrated on. " A noise of muse passed beyond his lips then as he considered something else, "And if you can come up with something that could do this kind of work on a larger scale, to make large projects easier, that would be something to invest in."

Grinning broadly, the tader let a silence settle between them, waiting for the woman's reply.

Amilyn frowned with disapproval over Jungi's statement. His words were offensive to say the least. "Are you claiming that my work is substandard?" she asked. How could something totally brand new be worse than previous models? There were no previous models. Perhaps he found her piece less than aesthetically pleasing. She thought that is was nice and shiny. People had different tastes. It was difficult to make them all happy.

Ami rubbed at her chin thoughtfully. "Maybe if I gave them opalescent blades," she considered thoughtfully. That would make them prettier. It would not help out of the larger size issue. "Bigger would would be harder to wind. The straps would have to be thicker to support the larger blades. Maybe if I used water tubes and firestone slots. Make it heat and pressure-based." She hummed to herself. She could probably do it. She would need to locate the supplies, though. How hard could that be?

Unconcerned with Amilyn's seeming to have taken offense at his words, Jungi was at an age and level of experience that he was comfortable with offending the sensibilities of others at times. Sometimes there was a need to. Sometimes it could be used as a tool to pose a challenge crafters to give him better work and thereby more valuable trade. It was also a tool to weed out those crafters who were serious about their business and those who were not; or it could help him gauge their character and what kind of business partner they would end up being.

"I have to ask the questions, does it work efficiently for the task at hand, or does it waste wood? Does it get the job done faster than previous technology, or would it be a waste of investment?  This tool fits in the hand, whereas woodcrafters use very large saws often times, for their work. How can this small thing cut down a tree? It might be small enough for more precision use, but to my eyes it looks inefficient for the task."

Jungi spoke honestly from his experience and had little concern for the craftsman's ego. Ego alone would not make marks and Jungi had a reputation and a business to protect. And he wasn''t exactly inexperienced at what he did. The trader went on hopefully though, "Perhaps we simply need to arrange a larger scale demonstration, so that you can show just how worthwhile your new tool is, but it has been my job to assess the value of goods before selling them. No trader can invest any significant amount of marks in something that is New and therefore a risk to his business, if he is not very certain of its worth. Even if there is a demand for something like it. It still constitutes a risk until its worth is proven to the buyer. I will take that risk on your goods however... but only if you can accommodate my requests."

The trader was then glancing in te direction of his sister before turning his eyes back on Amilyn, waiting for her reply. It was up to her if she wanted to try doing business with him, but he didn't have much more time to spend here with her today. There were other crafters on his list of new prospective clients that he needed to pay a visit.

"Of course it can do better," Amilyn said, flapping her wrist as if to ward away Jungi's concerns. "Anything can. I could make a version way more efficient at slicing trees than this little thing." She hefted the device up to eye level. She peered at the cylinder and the contours of the polished blades. She found it pleasing to look at. It was as much an aesthetic design as it was utilitarian. One would not want to be seen grooming themselves with a hideous monstrosity after all. To wield such an item was a status symbol that people could be proud to show off. That had been the idea, anyway.

"It would come at a cost," Ami stated. She lowered the item back to her side. "I mean, if you are sawing trees then you probably don't what it anywhere near your leg hairs. You'd be trading away half of its functionality. And really, does anybody want that?"
