Hair:  Brown  Although it occasionally looks closer to black as she does not wash it on a regular basis.  Its style, if it can be called that, is messy and unkept.

Eyes:  Brown

Height:  5’5”

Build:  Being a Smith, Amilyn is well-toned.  Her body is hard and strong.  While she does not look like a body-builder, she has clearly defined muscles.

Other Notable Physical Traits:

Amilyn has creased on her face.  They will eventually be wrinkles, but she is not quite that old yet.

Amilyn has ample scars across her body as does any Smith.  She has old burn scar on her arms from both the heat of the fires as well as from shards of red-hot metal than splintered off during hammering.  The same is true of her torso and thighs.  She has scars from failed inventions that have sliced in to her or that have outright detonated.

Amilyn is often dirty.  It is not uncommon to see her with dirt, grime, and/or grease smudges on her person.

Style of Dress:

Amilyn often wears tight-fitting clothing.  Her tops are usually sleeveless. Those that do possess sleeves are the kind of the short variety.  Baggy, loose clothing would only serve to hamper a Smith.

Possessions usually found on persona:

✣  Green Duffle Bag.  Amilyn carried the large bag with her when she travels.  It holds her food, some spare clothing, her tools, and little raw ore to work.✣  Inventions.  She came often be found with one silly invention or another.  It probably won’t work.  And it may detonate.

History:

Amilyn was born in a minor farm hold amidst the Eastern plains of Southern Boll.  During her early days, it was assumed that she would take up the family trade.  However Amilyn took more interest in the tools and the gadgets used for the farming than with the farming itself.  Even as a toddler, she would fiddle with the tools, although in those days she was more inclined to bash them repeatedly against the ground than to make any fine observations.

By the time that Amilyn was entering her teen years, her parents had abandoned any hope that she would follow in their foot steps.  It took but a little convincing to get her parents to agree to try to get her enrolled in the Smithcraft Hall.  She would mention the crafthall whenever the opportunity would present itself.  In the end, her parents agreed to send her there as much to shut her up as from a desire to see her happy.

Amilyn spent many Turns trying to learn as much as possible on the subject of how things function. She was more prone to try and discover whatever secrets a device may hold by attempting to reverse-engineer it than to simply accept her masters’ word on it.  Truth be told, she was still inclined to smack the tool around before the inevitable dismantling process came.

Amilyn has seen training in many a Smithcraft Hall.  She was not the most amiable of students.  Too often was she inclined to follow her own way of doing things rather than the way that she was being taught to.  She frustrated her instructors to the point were she was reassigned on more than one occasion.  However, Amilyn showed enough raw promise to prevent her from being dropped by the Craft.  Unfortunately, her unorthodox style caused her to lag behind the other students.  It took her two Turns longer than her peers to attain full Apprentice status and another two extra two to earn her Journeyman’s Rank.  Still, she did get there in the end, a fact that cost more than one Craft Master a few coins in lost bets.

Now Amilyn serves as a traveling Smith.  She is assigned from one location to the next based on the current need of the Holds, working as an assistant to the resident Crafter.  The frequent change in locale does not bother her.  Amilyn enjoys her time on the road and appreciates the changes in scenery.  When she does travel, she usually does so on foot.  While she can ride a runner, she generally prefers to walk.  It is slow going, but give her more time admire the landscape.

Amilyn has had two children.  She has been pregnant several other times.  None of the other pregnancies managed to carry to term.  Amilyn would often lose them due to concessive force brought on by the unexpected end to one of her more volatile inventions.   As she does not have much by way of motherly instincts, it never came as a great loss to her.  Amilyn was always quick on to her next great idea.

The first of her children came during her Apprenticeship at the Craft Hall.  She had been convinced by some fellow students to use certain distractions to relieve the stress training.  Given that it does not require much effort to get her to do what people want, Amilyn fell prey to their charms and suggestions.  It did not go over too well with her parents, but then what does?  She quickly forgot their displeasure, dropped the child off for fostering and continued on about her business.

The second child came from one of her early stints as a Hold’s Assistant Smith.  The father was one of the stewarts there.  When she left, Amilyn was content to leave the child behind.  Perhaps it will do well under its’ father’s tutelage.  Or not.  Who can say?

Rumor has it that Amilyn has also been kicked out of places from time to time due to ruining precious items of her hosts’.  And there is the slight possibility that she may have caved in a room once or twice.

Personality:

The young woman fancies her an inventor.  There is no particular explanation for it other than her love of new creations and new masterworks that will her legacy.  That and working on something new more entertaining that working on something old.

‘Inventor’ was Amilyn preferred area of specialization.  She tried out for it on several occasions.  She never managed to secure a spot with a Master of the field.  As it turns out, Amilyn is not particularly good at it.  Her inventions rarely work as intended.  They are prone to malfunction, failure, and are often more danger to use than they are a benefit.  That is hardly enough to dissuade her.

However, Amilyn is determined to show up everyone who mocked her through out her youth, in finally creating the perfect device.  She often loses herself in mindless creation fits, only to have her work blow up in her face.

Amilyn is still a cheery, happy, and friendly person.  She is almost always wearing a smile.   Amilyn is flighty and lacks any real form of common sense.  She is capricious, being easily distracted by other people.  She often loses her train of thought when interrupted.  She does not always see the consequences of her actions.  She rarely focuses for long on anything other her personal work.  Even there she falls short of her goals as her inventions fail and when she takes items apart, she may not be able to fully reassemble it.  She is also easily persuaded into doing just about anything (except for giving up on her dream).  This could -and has- lead her into trouble more times than she can count because she just does not think about the end result of her actions.

Shortcomings:

✣  Easily Manipulated.

✣  Lacks Foresight.

✣  Capricious.

✣  Spaces Out.

✣  Bad Inventor.

✣  Dangerous To Be Around.

Mannerisms or Habits:

✣  Tickers.  It is rare to find Amilyn not messing with some device or another.

✣  Sits On Things.  Amilyn is less likely to sit on chair than she is to sit on something else.  Anything else, really.

✣  Spaces Out.  As previously mentioned.  If she is not doing something that entertains her, Amilyn is quick to blank-out the world.  May be due to the numerous self-inflicted concussions that she has suffered.

Skills/Likes:

[Like 1]:  Machines.  Amilyn loves machinery.  She loves seeing machinery.  She loves fiddling with machinery.  She loves dismantling machinery (even when it is not hers).

[Like 2]:  Explosions.  She thinks that they are pretty.  She also causes them, though not necessarily on purpose.  In fact, she has been in so many that her body has essentially adapted to them.  Amilyn no longer takes grievous injuries from explosive damage.  They may still knock her out cold, however.

Dislikes:

[Dislike 1]:  Proper Smith Work. While she is surprisingly good at conventional smithing, Amilyn dislikes having to go that route.  She would much rather invent something new to perform the same task.

[Dislike 2]:  Failure.  She dislikes it.  And experiences it often.

Fighting Style/Weapon of Choice:

✣  Blunt Objects.  Being a Smith, she is dangerous when wielding a hammer.

✣  Her Fists.  Amilyn has high upper-body strength.  She will do more damage with her fists than the average person.

✣  Her Inventions.  Although, it is unintentional, she is likely to cause injury when her handiwork is used.

Crafter Information:

Craft:  Smith Craft

Years in Craft:  25 Turns

Rank:  Senior Journeymen.

Amilyn actually is a qualified journeyman.  She is fully capable of doing all of the traditional tasks that rank are required to have mastered.  She is unfortunately not likely to do so unless specifically made to.  Her go-to method is to invent a new way of doing old tasks, a method that will most likely fail and possibly blow-up in her face.

Location of Journeymanship:  She has studied in any Holds around the continent.  She actually acquired the Rank in a Craft Hall in Keroon Hold.

Specialization:  Officially:  None.  Unofficially:  Inventor.

Okay Marc...here comes the critique

*What is the point of her inventions? What is she trying to accomplish? People who are driven and determined have very defined goals and it seems like her life revolves around inventing something that will be awe inspiring but what is she really trying to do with it?

* Where are her children and why do they not make an appearance in her history? Was she ever married? Because while at the Weyr its acceptable for women to be loose and sleep with men they are not married to, the rest of Pern is not okay with this. So I think we need an explanation of if she was married or if she wasn't what she did to support her children or if she left them with her parents?

*I know she is traveling but where is she headed now?

*The part about her not being bright.... I don't feel like she isn't bright from what I'm reading throughout the rest of the bio. I kind of get the opposite from her tinkering and wanting to take things apart and put them back together. Maybe I'm not seeing it. So if you are keeping this in there, explain why she is not bright.

1) What is the point of her inventions? To be great, awe-inspiring inventions. That is the point. She does not possess the foresight to see beyond that singular goal.

2) Who are her children? Where are they? What are they doing? Those are very good questions. Questions that were intentionally left unanswered here. You'll find out; just wait for it. Wink

3) Where is she going? Where she is needed. I did not set a current location to make it flexible. If you need a character over here, then she could be over here. If you need one over there instead, then she could be over there.

4) Oh, she is not bright. She may have a knack for creatively useless machinery, but possessing a 'talent' does not make her smart. She doesn't think ahead, she is not very wise, she makes the same mistakes over and over again. She doesn't learn. She is just one of those happy, cheery, dumb people.

EDIT:

I have worked in some changes. For simplicity's sake, I'll copy them in here so that you don't have to hunt for them:

****Children*****

***Personality****

Amilyn is flighty and lacks any real form of common sense. She is capricious, being easily distracted by other people. She often loses her train of thought when interrupted. She does not always see the consequences of her actions. She rarely focuses for long on anything other her personal work. Even there she falls short of her goals as her inventions fail and when she takes items apart, she may not be able to fully reassemble it.
